Robinson-Maxim II?

Robinson retired for 3 years after this fight.

 

Im suprised SRR never pushed for a rematch before retiring, Id fancy him on pts, especially if he fought at a slower pace for the 1st 4 or 5 rds, he could still have baggd a rd or 2 at least THEN got on his toes later on & overtook then pulled away from Maxim only this time finish the fight.

 

I don't know by whom. There was a great deal of criticism of Maxim for not fighting Moore, and there was also a lot of criticism of Robinson for not fighting the rubber match with Turpin. Nat Fleischer really laid into both of them for this fight which he felt should have been put on hold until both got rid of the challengers who had earned a shot and took care of business in their own divisions.

 

Maxim may have beaten Robinson if there was a rematch.

 

Robinson would have won in my opinion but he had achieved all he was set to accomplish and felt he was no longer the fighter he used to be.

 

one of the first robinson fights i watched and may have clouded my judgement of him since. winning the rounds yes but i never saw the total domination and outclassing that I heard about. maxim seemed reserved, which suited him quite well in the end.

i don't subscribe to the robinson won except for the heat school of thought or the robinson automatically wins a rematch

 

Maxim did nothing to win the rounds and he wasn't a puncher. I don't see him outpointing Robinson in a rematch and I would not count on him to repeat the feat of "stopping" Robinson who wasn't exactly an easy man to KO.

 

1)agreed, he wasn't winning rounds

2)**** yeah, he wasn't stopping robinson by knockout

3)he outlasted robinson. and won that fight accordingly. not likely to be repeated but possible

 

I always wondered why SRR never pushed for the rematch until he got it, I doubt Maxim would have said no, its not like he fought in 2011 where the majority of the best fighters are a disgrace.

I would make Robinson a decent favourite, he was well ahead & boxing the **** out of Maxim in their fight, he was always a solid 15 rd fighter when needed (except for that 1 night in 202 fights)... the likely scenario would be a clear UD for Robinson IMO... but you never know I suppose.

 

The conventional wisdom is that if they rematched under more favorable temperature conditions, Robinson would have boxed Maxim to a deciaion...but who knows..maybe at the very least, Joey would have made it close. I really don't think the fight would have ended with a stoppage in any case.

Maxim held back in the heat.

On a normal day, Maxim wouldn't hold back. Bigger man, stronger jaw... Even if he wasn't much of a puncher. Maxim was strong and could crowd an opponent. Probably a lot better than what we remember him as.

Robinson probably wouldn't look a lot different apart from the fact he'd last the entire fight. Maxim would be notably more active.

 

Maxim wasn't a puncher for sure, and I wouldn't pick him to KO Robinson...but one of the things that bugged me a little bit about Ray's performance in the first fight is that he was wary enough of Maxim's power to keep moving the entire time and burn energy in a fight where he needed to conserve himself. I think Joey's power had a little more effect on Ray than it should've. Otherwise, Ray would've stayed a little more stationary, maybe eaten some more shots, but still done enough to win and last the distance.

In a rematch, it's tough to say what would've happened. Ray would've lasted the distance and showed he could score plenty enough to win, but Maxim would've also been more active himself.
