Really, Anto is the only one any bit worthy of the shot. And even at that, it's a massive mismatch in which he wouldn't win a round. But it makes sense for a stay busy fight in Ireland.

Am I the only one disappointed with the overall Irish performance in these world championships? Our two best boxers Ward and Barnes going out to opponents they should have beat comfortably. Moylette who normally excels in these big tournaments crashing out at the first fence. Egan and Sheehan moving up in weight was a mistake, particularly for Sheehan whose chances would have fared much better at the lower poundage. And how many times was our boxers chasing first round deficits but eventually went on to barely win or just get pipped at the post. Is there an issue with their warming up methods or is there a lack of urgency at the start of the contest [ you can be too relaxed]. Nevin and Conlan deserved to win their contest against their British opponents, but I've notice the British boxers in this tournament getting a lot of "lucky" decisions, but then again it is the London Olympics next year so I'm sure that played a big part in it. But all the same good luck to the three British boxers, I hope they all go home with a gold. If so it will help raise the profile of the sport in their country and ultimately ours also.

Agree with this. Maybe my expectations were a bit high but i was hoping for at least five boxers to qualify for the olympics. Does anyone know how the next euro qualifying tournament for the olympics works? Is there only one euro boxer at each weight to qualify?

I have to agree with you, I feel a lot of them would be disappointed with their performances. This is not to criticize them unfairly they have pushed their standards up so high so that 10-15 best nation on different criteria is low for them.
I disagree that Ward or Barnes are our best boxers, Nevin is and has been for three years. His performances against the Worlds best are always consistent and if beaten it's usually by only one score.I feel we put a lit too much emphasis on the Europeans, for example Russia and Ukraine only sent second string sides. Ukraine were the best side at the Worlds though Russia were even more disappointing than the Irish. Not one Euro champion won in Baku!
England did great and had three finalists but we'd expect to win a contest between us. Some good news Conlon has well and truly arrived on the World scene and will get better. Ward and Barnes should qualify next year and 60, 64 and 69 kg should also see a qualifier. Sheehan too will have a shout.

Agree with you Ardy I think the team definaltley flopped but 3 qualifying is still good going, but I think Ireland were on the end of a few bad descions and it seems we never get the countback or very rarely in this tournament anyway, I thought Ward won his fight and didnt deserve a 2 point penalty and same with DOJ who was punching the Indian from pillar to post only to be unfairly given a 2 point penalty with 4 seconds left when all the Indian was doing was hanging on for dear life. Also thought Nevin and Conlon were very unlucky and I think Egan and Sheehan need a bit more time to grow into the weights and both also have dencent shouts to qualify for London.

The last time there was smaller qualifiers in Europe there was 2 tournaments with the finalists of both touranments qualifying so with there being only 1 this time I would think it will be semi finalists .If this is the case I would fancy Ireland to qualify most lads with the way we have been dominating in Europe lately as most of Europes top boxers have already qualified for London with the exception of one or two like Selimov and Backsai etc.

Just checked there and as far as I know there is 8 or 9 places for each weight division from 49kg to 81kg and 7 in 91 and 91+ for Europe in London which would leave -

    5 places in 49 kgs
    5/6 in 60 kgs
    1/2 in 64 kgs
    2/3in 69 kgs
    5/6 in 81 kgs
    3 in 91kgs
    3 in 91+

Imo we have a great chance for another 3 or 4, I would fancy us to qualify at 49, 60, and 81 and maybe 69 !
