How do you think jack johnson would have adjusted his game for the modern era?

In the 9 rounds he fought against byrd he lost 4.

He didn't look great against johnson but he was too defensive to counter back.

Maybe haye would give us more of a clue.

No, wlad dominated byrd where vitali struggled.

You could argue he lost 5rounds against Byrd imo

Vitali and many modern took steroids (Vitali is proven to have done so), Johnson never had that advantage

I had Byrd winning 2 rounds, which was the same as all three judges if I am not mistaken.

    5, 6, 7 & 9 were quite clear rounds for byrd imo.

Dunno how the judges saw it. I just know it was close enough that was chris to sweep the last 3 he'd definitely deserve the decision.

he would have to do a lot of ad******g to fight the 60s and 70s fighters because he'd get his
arse kicked over and over again!

how on earth would he be able to compete? its a joke. it seems like too many people here hold him sacred or something, st. jack, no less.

from the clips i've seen of him he wouldn't stand a chance, c'mon, lets be honest here! he was great in his day, but wouldn't be so decades later.

What is it about his style you think would lead to constant losses between 60 and 70?

    Lufcrazy,

He lost four rounds? All three judges disagree with you, and keep in mind Vitali took the Byrd fight on less than 2 weeks notice, and was fighting with a torn shoulder which required surgery. If not for the injury, Vitali wins easy.

Vitali at age 38-39 won ever single round vs. Kevin Johnson, who did nothing but run and cover up. It was likely Vitali's worst performance in years, but it was a clean 12-0 shut out on the cards. Kevin Johnson was a big man with a large reach of 80". Jack Johnson would be short today, and had only a 74" reach, which pretty much rules out the long straight counters that Kevin Johnson was able to land maybe 3-4 times in a fight where he was being out landed in every single round.

Here's a fact. Jack Johnson lost more rounds to Frank Moran, and Jack O'Brien than Vitali Klitschko did in his entire professional boxing career. If this doesn't punctuate who was the better boxer was, who was harder to hit, and who was more difficult to win rounds against, I'm not sure what will.

Which rated fighters had Kevin Johnson beat, or even fought to merit a title shot when he challenged Vitali? Which has he met since?
    Answer to both questions, NONE.

    Here's a fact.

A 28 year old Vitali quit in a fight he was winning against a greatly undersized and outweighed feather fisted opponent, claiming a torn rotator cuff sustained in the 5th round.

James Buddy McGirt went into a fight with Pernell Whitaker, allready suffering this injury, he went 12rds to a dec and, was competitive all through out.
A 37 year old Jack Johnson , who had not fought in nearly a year and a half, carrying a broken arm,[ sustained in the 3rd rd ], struggled through a 10rds fight to a draw against a hard hitting opponent ,9 years younger,a man considerably bigger and heavier.:deal

I don't care what the judges think; I can watch the fight myself whenever I please.

So likewise byrd also took the fight on 2 week notice.

We'll never know who wins easily because a rematch never tool place.

I also saw the kevin johnson fight. As I said, he didn't look great and kingpin isn't known for counters, he's known for his jab.

That punctuates nothing i'm afraid. Lewis lost more official rounds to holyfield than vitali officially lost in his career. Doesn't mean vitali is better at all.

We'll never see vitali v johnson but watching the byrd fight makes you wonder what a better version of byrd would have done.
