Why do todays fighters only fight 1-2 times a year?

There's a hell of a lot less boxing shows now than there was back in, say, the 30's, for one reason. It's particularily a problem for championship level fights, where to make money is has to be on tv, and has to have months of hype, and with the small amount of tv stations showing boxing and only liking to air it on certain nights, there's not alot of oppurtunity.

 

Tougher to make big fights as guys vying for a title seem unwilling to commit to stepping up against quality opposition or take risks against unknown, untested fighters trying to break out from obscurity.

For the champs it is money. They make more in one or two bouts than old timers did in 20 fights, and that is inflation adjusted. Champs in pre-1960's had to fight exhibitions and non-title fights to make ends meet in some cases. If any of todays fighters made only 20,000 or less for a title bout after taxes, they would fight more.

 

Money, safety.

Fighters fought a lot more back then but they also suffered the consequences.

 

Also its only the elite and idle who do it.

When your coming up,you fight 4-5 times a year easily,maybe more.

Even most champs wuill fight 3 times a year.

The Klitschkos have been fighting about 3 times a year on average.

 

Khan has 3 fights a year and Tyson Fury will be having his 4th fight this year in December.

 

it's been like that for a long time. Even Joe Louis fought once or twice a year during most of the 40s.

 

Money is obviously the main reason.

HW champs were always well paid. The HW champs, Pre-Louis, were extremely inactive in defending their belts. They often fought in a lot of well paid exhibitions instead.

 

the less they fight the longer they have their straps for, there is money to be made outside of the ring through endorsements and public appearences....and being the champ, well everyone wants a piece of you.

 

also fighters train for 2-3 months for big fights.

 

becuase life is easier in so many ways
