I havent seen enough of SRR. I really wish I could see some half decent quality video of him at welterweight, Ive seen some great footage of him at I believe middle weight (?). Was impressive there. So as of right now, to me, Im going SRL.

 

Muhammad Ali is the greatest man to ever box.

 

Yea, it's more of a lack of seeing him actually fight then anything? Are there any decent quality welter weight fights from him up anywhere?

I didnt want to just say SRR because everyone else was even though I havent seen much footage from him.

That's exactly why he is my shoe-in number 1!

It's such a shame no footage of him is available.

Also I'll add, he was stopped only twice, once when he was green and in his 5 (?) fight, and the other when he suffered a broken arm and his corner pulled him out (it should be noted he wanted to carry on).

 

Well, simply put, we live in an era where people are quite lazy, due to the major advances in technology. Cell phones, internet etc. In a case like Greb's, we have to STUDY! Read the many newspaper accounts and round by round reports of the many great fights he had and won. There is no known fight footage of the great Greb, but there is fight footage of many of the legends he beat, like....Gene Tunney, Tommy Loughran, Mickey Walker, Kid Norfolk, Tommy Gibbons, Bill Brennan and many others.

Remember, this is a man that Dempsey wouldn't fight. Greb handed Dempsey his ass in sparring. Here is some of the article.....

Dempsey tackled Bill Tate, Harry Greb and Marty Farrell this afternoon. He took them on in that order, boxing two rounds with Tate and three each with Greb and Farrell. The bout with Greb was a real one. It was the best work-out Dempsey has had. The Pittsburgher was in prime shape, and although he weighs only 165 pounds he gave the champion a real honust-to-goodness battle. Dempsey hasn't seen so many gloves in a long time as Greb showed him. Greb was all over him and kept forcing him around the ring throughout the session. Dempsey could do but little with the speedy light heavyweight, while Greb seemed to be able to hit Dempsey almost at will. Time and again Greb made the champion miss with his famous right and left hooks to the head and countered with heavy swings to the head and hooks to the body. (end)


Greb is a great, great fighter and it would be unfair to him and his great legacy to discount him because some of us are too lazy to do research. I personally rate Greb as #2 pound for pound, only behind the great, Sugar Ray Robinson. I have been studying boxing almost my entire life and believe me when I tell you that NO ONE comes even close to the resume that Harry Greb had and remember, he died at the age of 32.

 

Good for you, buddy. I personally rate Robinson as #1 with Greb a close second, but I would be a fool to argue with you or anyone else who rates Greb as #1. And I believe it was Greb's 7th pro fight when he was knocked out. Either way, the man had a chin of IRON.

 

You can make a case for Langford, Greb or Armstrong but I always come back to Sugar Ray.
