You guys see a similarity to Valero?? I never put that together. Although... I have never seen Valero fight. I see more of a Gerald McClellan, Thomas Hearns, Wladimir Klitschko type of style. I am a big fan of Manny Stewards training style, and Jonathans talents are perfectly suited to fight in that style. Long and lean with dynamite in both hands. Not to mention he is a southpaw.
Obviously he has a tremendous amount to learn, but for 5 months I think the kid is extraordinary. Like if you skip to 10:30 in the video he sidesteps Cesar right hand and counters perfectly, and unleashes hard accurate punches from then till the bell.

We say he looked like Valero because he pawed a couple of right hands then threw a combo

Well... I watched some Valero footage on youtube. You guys have a good eye. I think you both made an accurate assessment.

It would help to see him in with someone intent on punching him but I have my better fighters work with the new guys too. Your 118 pound guy makes several rookie errors but he has a great athletic base to build on. I would be happy to have him in my gym too.

He makes rookie mistakes because he just walked in the gym 5 months ago. LOL I am surprised it took till the second page for someone to make a negative comment. Stating that a kid with 5 months boxing experience makes rookie mistakes is like saying grass is green, or the sky is blue.

I watched the fight of his where he put down his opponent with (I believe) a straight left. Now I'm watching this and wow, quite a leap in skill already. Really impressed with some of the combos he threw and with the authority he threw them with. Very impressive for 5 months in, good job and keep us updated.

I am just as honest in evaluating my own boxers. It was not meant to be a criticism per-say. It was meant as a statement of fact based upon him making mistakes and being a 5 month rookie. Negative comments are all part of boxing and training. If I tell a boxer he is wonderful and does everything well and he then steps into the ring and gets koed. It would not be his fault, it would be mine. You totally missed the part where I said I would be happy to have him in my gym. My post was a very positive one and you are too sensitive.

i like his style. i wouldnt change a thing. he likes to jab and throw the left hand, valero. as long as he works on his footwork, and moving his head a little, he'll be just fine. practice makes perfect:good

He is a southpaw which is good but he needs to close his glove when he jabs. Refs will call that every time. Like I said, I would like to see him against another fighter intent on punching him. He pulls straight back with his hands down and bends over at the waist. A decent boxer would make him pay for this. He seems a little slow for a bantam weight and his punches are wide. If you hated my comments before you will really hate these. I would still be happy to have him in any gym I trained at. A very good prospect indeed. :thumbsup

LOL I agree I see similarities with him and valero. He's chin is a little bit up in the air when he is throwing his punches. But at 14 yrs old, he looks good. Keep it up!

WOW so you're telling me that at 14 yrs old and 5 months boxing experience he is not a finished product? I never would have guessed... I was gonna turn him pro this week, and try and line up a title shot.
As for your honest assessment... do you really think you made some sort of brilliant contribution by saying a kid with 5 months boxing experience makes rookie mistakes? You figured that all out by yourself, or did the ghost of Eddie Futch help you make that genius observation?
I posted the video because I thought that the fans in this forum would appreciate seeing a young kid with some real talent engaging in some hard sparring.

The chin in the air drives me nuts, but it will be corrected over time.
