Full David Haye Statement

I like Haye regardless of how he acts, you have to realise that that's what a lot of it is........An act.......
Like Adam Booth said today "we achieved all of our goals we set out to do after the commonwealth games, I'm proud of David".

 

I don't dislike the guy - most of what every fighter says is to hype a fight - I'd just rather he wasn't still slating the heavyweight division when all he contributed to it was making himself a ****load of money. He didn't exactly have a string of fights against better opposition than the brothers Klitschko, nor were any of his heavyweight fights all that entertaining.

He retires with his health intact and his bank balance healthy - presumably - so good on him.

 

It is difficult to cut through the hype on one hand and controvesy on the other to a sensible assesment of his legacy.

Here is how I call it:

He will be regarded as a great cruiserweight champion in the light of history, by virtue of having unified the division.

It will also be noted in his favour, that he was the only cruiserweight champion since Evander Holyfield to win a major version of the heavyweight title.

As a heavyweight belt holder of the era, he will be regarded as one of the weaker ones on paper.

It will also be suggested that his early retirment prevented him from building a better legacy in that division, even if he could never have beaten either of the Klitschko brothers.

He will be regarded as one of the better British fighters of the era based on his cruiserweight reign, and the best British heavyweight since Lennox Lewis.

And that essentialy will be the size of it.

 

Yeah i agree with all that mate....I didnt have any real feeling towards Wlad or Vitali prior to the Haye vs Wlad bout, but now the K Bro's have really grown on me, Wlad more so......Ive got a lot of time for Wlad now.....Nice fella is Wlad.

Pretty honest and accurate summation of his career there. I'm not bitter at him. I'd have loved him to be a warrior thirsty for the blood of the klitschkos but truth is he had a career, achieved a lot, fell short at heavy, made his money, still got his senses intact, fair play to him.

He played the game and won.

 

Incredible to think that Haye's whole professional career amounts to just 114 rounds, less than 6 hours of actual boxing.

 

All very cold and calculated though.

In life it's quite often the what you didn't do, what you could have done when the chance was there, that catches up with you in time.

Fair play to him for getting out early though, if he feels he doesn't need it anymore, good luck to him. Shame on him for making the likes of the Audley fight though, trash match ups like that should never be applauded...

I don't think we've heard the last of him. I expect this is a stunt to tempt Vitali to offer a bit more money.

He forgot to mention Wlad put him down about 7 or 8 times in their fight :deal

 

Haye will be back in feb/mar. This is just to give the Vitali fight even more hype.....
