HBO almost did a deal with UFC, but Dana White botched it. At this point I think it won't happen, but who knows. Probably eventually it will.
What I really wonder now is if he'll change a couple things like signing fighters to exclusive contracts and whether he'll counter program against Showtime like HBO used to do in the past. Hopefully now if they both have shows on the same night, they stack them time wise. Either way, the HBO budget should end up getting used more wisely.
I was thinking that too. But it's well known that Dana White and Hershman absolutely hate each other. So it's hard to imagine them coming to an agreement. Since Strikeforce is owned by Zuffa/UFC, I'm not so sure they'll be able to come together either. Besides the UFC has a deal with Fox now and there's rumors of Strikeforce folding into the UFC. That leaves Bellator as the only only other semi-viable MMA organization, and based on it's MTV2 ratings, I don't think it would be an organization HBO would be interested in if they plan on getting into the MMA business.
So what. Seems HBO is simply keeping up the status quo. Just like every other network of signifigance.
with him at HBO.. I think he will make it so that Showtime still eats but HBO gets their position back at the top.. no more going head to head on Saturdays.. Ken will just make sure HBO's programing, fighters, Tourney's and spotlight on real up and comming fighters is game tight...
I'm excited about this change, BUT if he brings MMA to HBO then I'll be pretty pissed. Keep that sideshow as far away from HBO boxing as possible.
This is a probably a power play by Arum. This is the strings attached to getting Pacman back to fight for HBO Sports. Remove Ross Greenburg and replace him with Ken Hershman. This is to reduce the clout of Al Haymon and Golden Boy in HBO Sports. Now only Davis is left for them. If Davis is removed and another exec from Showtime is hired, then that will be the confirmation that Arum had a hand in all of this.
