prime for prime, @160 who takes it? i say hagler. Too tough and his deceptively quick, southpaw jab and feints would cause trouble for roy its close though
Hagler would pressure Jones, stick to him, and corner him. Add to that Hagler's physical strength, chin, stamina, wealth of experience against all kinds of monsters, and his superior skill and it spells "bad night for Roy". The skill factor should not be overlooked. Hagler confused Duran with his switching so smoothly in and out of the southpaw position - and Duran was light years ahead of Roy in terms of both experience and skill. I did a post on another board acknowledging that Duran is a defensive master and yet Hagler was connecting very often because he was both highly skilled and confusing. Eddie Futch gave Montell Griffin an effective strategy for Jones because Futch saw what everyone else was too dazzled to see - technical weaknesses. Griffin pressured him, stuck to his chest, and tried to pin him with hooks on the inside. Watch any of Roy's fights and when he is cornered and the opponent (usually just that - an opponent) is close and on him, he looked utterly bewildered.. stretching his neck, turning his head, even closing his eyes. This is where Hagler would be. And Hagler is far stronger than Griffin and Hopkins. I see Jones leaping in to potshot Hagler and Hagler timing him with an overhand and then sliding right in and working his ribs, bulling him into the corner, and preventing escape. All night.
Hagler is a God around these parts, but I think Roy wins this one. I don't think Hagler ever fought anyone with the combination of speed and power at MW that Roy had. Just can't see him pulling this one out.
I agree and Roy was a very good MW. SRL confused Hagler so can you imagine Roy's speed and agility against Hagler. Even though Hagler was already slipping by the time SRL fought him. Roy via decision.
But that power is made redundant by Marvin's cast-iron skull structure and immense determination / mental sharpness. Sure Jones had speed. Sure Jones has out-of-range ability with sneaky leaping lead hooks and sneaky leaping lead rights, he has very good outside timing, he has freakish reflexes. I agree with all of that, and maybe he could be out-boxing Marvin by staying away, following long rights with double hooks and dancing across; but Hagler can switch positions and try again, he can work his way in and fire up the ribs, he can make it a slugest, can Hagler. Taking power and movement away, if Hagler is able to force his way inside and cut off the corners, what does Jones have left? A flashy flurry won't stop Hagler from persisting. So what does Jones have? -Clinching?? He'll have to do better than that with peaked Marvin.
not really. Prime Roy's chin was a lot better than Roy after the Ruiz fight [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UEtWnFFaZs[/ame]
Anyone as freakishly gifted as prime Roy was stands a hell of a chance in any fight. But was he ever pushed to the limit for 12 (or 15) rounds like Hagler would push him. Roy would dazzle early on, but Hagler would take him into the trenches and probably stop Roy late.
He had slipped dramatically by the time he fought Hearns, let alone two and a half years later against Ray with only one rusty match in between. Leonard's athleticism was only a supplement to sound technique, of which Jones did not possess! Leonard was a master technician AND strategist, which is the actual primary reason he did so well against Hagler. Jones was not a good strategist - he failed to solve the Griffin puzzle, out-feinted and out-boxed. Hagler in his peak in the late 70s was a suttle, subtle feinter and counterpuncher.
Jones, too good. The only reason I might hesitate to pick him is a possible lack of experience, which is a very bad thing against The Marvelous One, but he looked as good as ever in his last few fights at the weight and put on the best performance of his career in his very first fight above the division. I think he was pretty much the finished article by his last fight at 160.
Hagler is more powerful than every single fighter in that video by a large margin, where's the comparison.
Hagler definitely could stop Roy, but I hate that people look at post Ruiz Roy and assume that other fighters would only need to land one punch to KO prime Roy. If Jones retired after Ruiz, people would have said he had a great chin
Too good? For Hagler? Hagler at his best was way beyond good. Too fast, you mean? Even then it's only one asset. Of course Hagler did not have the blazing speed of Jones. He had a legion of other advantages that include in no particular order: 1. Far more experience with a far greater variety of opponents and a far higher caliber of opponents and far more experience in dealing with real challengers and adversity. 2. Technical superiority which suggests to me that it would be Hagler, not Jones who would be varying the attack and applying multi-dimensional strategies in the ring. He was far more well-rounded. A cretin would suggest otherwise. 3. Both fighters exchange multiple blows throughout the bout. Whose chin holds up? There is only one answer here, friends.
IDK if he would survive or not, the only glaring weakness Roy possessed was being knocked out. Hagler has nearly a 80% KO ratio in 67 fights and most of them being early in fights.
