Can B-Hop have the stamina/workrate to avoid another Taylor/Calzaghe style "loss"?

In 2005 at the age of 40, Bernard was on the wrong end of the judges' decisions twice because he couldn't sustain his workrate over 12 rounds against the younger, faster, busier Jermain Taylor - despite Hopkins clearly doing the cleaner, better, more effective work in both fights.

In 2008 at the age of 43, Bernard was on the wrong end of the judges' decision because he couldn't sustain his workrate over 12 rounds against the younger, faster, busier Joe Calzaghe - despite Hopkins clearly doing the cleaner, better, more effective work in the fight.

In 2011 at the age of 46, Bernard is fighting a taller, longer, younger, faster fighter in Chad Dawson. Despite Dawson's considerable technical abilities, I can easily see Hopkins doing the cleaner, better, more effective work yet again.

But can he do enough of it again facing these disadvantages, or is the older man going to get outworked, and again suffer a "loss" on the cards against a clearly inferior opponent?

If Bernard does win this fight, where do you rank it among his best wins? Considering Dawson's pedigree, talent, and physical/stylistic advantages, I think it has to be right up there in the Trinidad/Tarver top range of quality.

I dont think so to be honest, he will win rounds and use all kind of tricks but I still feel it will end up close in the end.

We're talking about b hop out working Chad Dawson. This isn't even an issue in my opinion, unless Dawson had some kind of epiphany in camp. I'm not taking anything away from Dawson, I think he's an excellent fighter, I just don't see work rate as a focal point or even a topic of conversation regarding this fight.

As for your question on where would this win rank in b hops resume, I'd rank it top 5 honestly, I think highly of Chad Dawson, contrary to what I said previously in the post haha.

Dawson has shown a real tendency to do the opposite of what is sensible, this includes frequently throwing punches. He won't be doing a 12 round Calzaghe impersonation, Hopkins will more than likely outwork him for large parts of the fight. Any win at this point in time over a top level opponent is considered fantastic given his age.

I was fascinated by the weigh is pictures of Hopkins and Dawson. Dawson looked unsure of himself, while Hopkins seemed utterly calm, cold and unfaced.

Dawson got athletic talent but he is mentally weak. He cant repeat what prime Taylor and Calzaghe did.

I know too little about Trinidads career to compare the wins, but Dawson is prime, talented and has only lost once. I leave it to say it will be another top win for the executioner.

This, Dawson needs to press the action for 3 minutes of each round for 12 rounds then he's got a shot but if he fights in spurts and the pace is slowed down then expect another Hopkins win.

Yup like Rico said .Dawson has to dicate the pace .Hopkins doesn't have the same work rate against Boxers as he does against plodders !!

I hope Dawson is mentally prepared enough to be frustrated round after round. This is Bernards strategy. Win the fight mentally. He is going to try the same things that he did against Pascal, and that worked well. Bernards mental toughness to win probably will edge out Dawson's physical advantages. To me this is a tough fight to pick, but its hard to bet against Bernard as he just keeps finding ways to win. I'm looking forward to the fight.

Not really. Judges are known to give rounds to whoever throws more.
Because Jermain was more active they saw him beating Hopkins while in reality Hopkins out boxed him.

He was able to reduce even Calzaghe's output in the first half of the fight, not to mention that he increased volume over power at this weight class in his next fight which was Pavlik. Maybe Chad won't find room to punch like Kelly said in the 11th.

If Dawson reverts back to his old style, he has the potential to win a UD.

the question I have is Dawson. I don't think he is very good with his inconsistent fights and Hopkins sees this. Dawson might surprise me tonight but I doubt it. The way Hopkins looked against Taylor and Calzaghe the last few years shows he can be beaten easily enough if a guy uses his speed and youth and wins the rounds invidually. Hopkins is picking his fights well.

What are you basing this on? When Adamek dropped Dawson, Chad came back in the next round warring with him and rocked Tomasz, on his way to winning a clear decision. He got rocked by Glen Johnson, yet he dug deep enough to eek out a close decision and then defeated him clearly in a rematch after the controversy of their first meeting. He lost a lot of early rounds to Jean Pascal, but he came on in the later rounds and was giving Pascal a beating prior to the fight ending prematurely. This, to me, doesn't show the makeup of someone who is "mentally weak." I can understand people calling him "passionless," "lackadasical,," or "inconsistent" as Chad often appears to just be going through the motions. But I can't understand calling him "mentally weak."
