I knew that Hopkins was only taking this fight because he believed the hype and thought Dawson was mentally weak. He saw an uninspired Dawson against Pascal and Diaconu and thought he could break him mentally and steal the decision if they fought, so he made it happen. Dawson wasn't motivated against those guys because he didn't rate them, he was lazy. Against Adamek and Tarver he was ready to go as he saw them as a threat. Dawson was always going to be motivated for a name like Hopkins. At the weigh-in Hopkins realised his mistake, he saw a relaxed guy with complete self belief. He started to get angry and apprehensive when he was face to face with him. Usually we see Hopkins getting the mental edge before a fight but not with Dawson. Hopkins must've been thinking "what happened to the mentally fragile guy?" Then to the fight.. Dawson had a look on his face like it was a walk in the park, Hopkins looked nervous and was backpedalling the whole time. He saw how fast and composed Dawson was and looked for a way out. He's tried this before, against Calzaghe and Jones. This is meant to be a tough guy from prison and he's acting like that? I have friends who have dislocated their shoulders who aren't close to being tough guys and they didn't act like that. Was there an injury? Maybe, I don't know. The thing I do know is that Hopkins GREATLY overexaggerated the pain. Why would he do that? He wanted a way out, his history and that performance showed it. There is no way to defend Hopkins in this situation. Congratulations to Dawson but I feel sorry for him, after training so hard for a fight that you've wanted for years to have your opponent ***** out must be really disappointing. Hopefully Dawson can get revenge on Pascal and stay motivated.
exactly. edit: and to the OP, I agree fully. Bernard avoided Dawson for a while and thought he could break him down mentally like you said, but Dawson had a different mindset for this fight. I noticed and was looking to see how Dawson's composure was in the ring before the bell and he was calm and had desire in his eye. Dawson knew he could beat Hopkins more than Hopkins believed he could beat Bernard. Now Dawson won the first 2 rounds like expected, but you can't base the fight off of those 2 rounds though since B Hop always starts late anyways. if you based the first 2 rounds of the Pascal fight, you'd think Bernard was going to get KOed. But I still believe Dawson was going to win tonight
Dawson is not mentally fragile or anything that people claim. In fact I believe Dawson is one of the toughest mentally. He has total confidence in himself.
Bunch of B.S. and conjecture. I don't believe Hopkins is the kind of guy to quit at the first sign of adversity - there's little in his career to suggest that. The injury was genuine and it's unfortunate for all around, but Hopkins deserves a little more respect than this.
I don't know...Hopkins fought through real adversity against Pascal in the early rounds twice. Nothing seemed to happen here. It looked like we were going to get another Jermain Taylor type of fight with Dawson winning rounds by keeping his jab pumping and Hopkins being inactive and moving away. Neither he or Dawson looked like anything to be impressed by.
Exactly. I don't understand the idea that Dawson did nothing wrong but I really don't understand the idea that Dawson somehow deserves accolades for this "performance."
You didn't watch the Calzaghe fight? The 2nd Jones fight? I'm a sometimes fan of Hopkins, I was happy for him when he beat Pascal, I supported him when he was fighting Taylor, I cheered for him when he beat Tarver. But then I lose respect for him. This is meant to be a tough guy and he acts like that? It's embarrassing for the sport that somebody well regarded in boxing can act like that. Bernard has defended his dirty tactics in the past by saying that "It's a fight, you need to be prepared to die in there. I know I am." Really? When things aren't going Hopkins way he pulls this ****, he has a history of it. I don't respect that.
He doesn't deserve accolades, nothing much happened. Hopkins bailed because he saw it wrong. I think Dawson shouldn't be called mentally weak anymore because he's obviously not, I feel sorry for Dawson but I don't think any higher of him.
lol in the 5 minutes & 2 punches thrown in the entire fight..... we saw Boreson had Hopkins done mentally?????? r u nutz???
So because he looked determined at the weigh-in and landed 5 punches in the first, he's officially mentally strong and had Hopkins done mentally?
I watched those fights and they both went the full distance, I just don't believe Hopkins would quit after less than two rounds.
If anything transpired tonight it was that Chad won back the "Bad" in his nickname. He looked motivated, composed, focused, and aggressive. He looked like a lethargic zombie in past fights, but looked much better here.
Hopkins looked lost and couldnt land ****, dawson looked liek he was gonna beat him up, Hopkins bitched out instead of taking a beating.
