exactly, that's my point. darcy is what he is: a question. he suffers the same pitfalls as anyone but frankly i put him into the same boat as tony ayala. maybe he would've been something, maybe not. based on what he did do though there are fascinating possibilities
I don't agree with that second part,..... Darcy's record is simply magnificent,... he beat some great fighters and many good ones,.... he beat every top MW in the world between 1914 to 1916 apart from Mike Gibbons who Darcy certainly would have ended up fighting at some point...... all by the age of 20..... never knocked out...... only outpointed slightly on two occasions at age 17 and 18.....and DQ'd twice. Can anyone hold those losses against him ???.............. Both decisions were close and both were over 20 rounds.... He won 46 with 29 KO's................ Did Tony Ayala ever approach That ????
agreed but they weren't to be compared in skill or achievement but more that there was a lot of untapped potential for both. darcy had not accomplished what he should and likely would have. comparing him in a head to head basis to greb is reasonable but in a legacy or all time great ranking they are likely years apart. the point simply is that darcy lacked the chance to make the most of his skills
And there was no intention of downgrading Tony Ayala, I respect him and he's a worthy subject,... He was pretty good at stopping opponents..... he must have had a good whack on him.
no worries, i despise ayala as a person and there's no need to defend him. i love the darcy conversations on here because it gives me a chance to learn more about a fighter i know little of. it's a tragic waste that he couldn't compete with the best america had to offer to.
Some of the Darcy books are good and they really give a feel for that era...... and for Greb fans a good insight into the world that Harry was starting out in, it's good to learn about the top fighters in all divisions of that time,..... Me and Klompton are opposite sides of the Darcy story but we are very similar as far as being very keen about this era...... We may even have identical opinions about many fighters....... it remains to be seen.
when i said your fight with klompton has been my favourite in some time i meant it. you guys may go at each other's throats but the information thrown back and forth is incredibly valuable for those of us just reading. my era is the 1990s: i grew up in the 80s and 90s and that is where my initial interest was. the 70s followed and i've been trying to learn more about each era as i go. the 10s and 20s i have knowledge only of the top guys and main historical points and darcy is one that slipped under my radar until recently
When you really think about it, it is quite an astonishing record. Is there anyone ever whose record might stack up against Darcy's, at he age of 20 years old? Definitely not Johnson or even Jeffries or Ali. I dont think Louis had victories in the same class. Not Sugar Ray Robinson. I would have to think hard about it, but i really cant think of anyone who did as well, at that age. What was Ketchell's record like at this age?
I appreciate that mate......... another fighter I am starting to research is Tommy Uren a LW going on WW who made a mess of McGoorty,.. and had many very good wins, he had Clabby's measure.. and was giving away 12 pounds or more when me moved up to the MW division...... The only decent info I've found is newspaper sources,... I don't know if sources like this are any good but I don't think there was ever a biography of this remarkable individual who was a star Ruby League player for Manly,.... an afore-mentioned boxer,,,, a WW2 Prisoner of War,.. courtesy of Japan..... and a long time member of Parliament. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uren was the first Australian boxer to be touted as "The Next Les Darcy",................... despite early promising signs,...... he falls short of "The Maitland Wonder",.... however, by a long way, but to be fair to Tommy,.... Uren fought on way past his prime..... he was shot by 1922. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I would really appreciate if there was someone who could shine some more light of this long forgotten Champion.
