Steward was talking about him last night like he's the 2nd coming of Ray Leonard, you would think Steward wants to train him. His coordination and hand speed looks great, but what about his actual skills?
Linares is very good on the offensive. Like you say, he has good handspeed coupled with great punch variety and composite punching. That being said, he seems to become increasingly lackadaisical as the fights ware on. Very hittable, but doesn't neccesarily possess the toughness and punch resistance required to handle what his opponents are landing. You can throw as many punches, and land as many punches as you like, but if you can't hurt your opponent, you're most likely going to be in for a tough night. Linares has seemingly lacked the capacity to hurt opponents at 135lbs. I'd expect Linares to feature in some great match-ups over the coming years, but I don't see him setting the world a-light.
he always impresses with athleticism but stamina seems to be an issue in the fights I've seen of him, either that or he's easy to figure out cause he comes out blazing but almost always looks worse later fights. used to think he was on his way to P4P rankings and even gave him a second chance thinking he'd easily whup Demarco. I don't think Freddie's the trainer for him, he needs a more defensive/ countering style.
I was surprised that the HBO Commentators were creaming over this guy that way. I actually heard Sugar Ray Robinson's name brought up in the conversation of Linares. I think Lampley or Kellerman brought it up. It was quite innapropriate. Linares has skills and size, and he was physically bigger than DeMarco, but he seems weak for his size. I don't know how good he will be, but I do know He'd better stay away from 140. He doesn't have the physical strength to compete with the beasts there.
He's not good, nor was he ever. Mijares had the skills, just lacked the mentality. Linares lacks the skills, the mentality, and the chin.
