Why do old time fighters such as greb armstrong pep etc get massive credit for having

They don't simply get credit for having a bunch of fights (there have been many fighters who've had a ****-load of fights combined with having a very high win percentage that are lost to history because they didn't take on the best), they get credit for beating top notch opponents.

For example, Armstrong beat more rated contenders (many of them multiple times) than Calzaghe even had fights. The highlighted fighters being Hall of Famers (although a few more like Zurita, Casanova, and Sarron should be as well).

I dont think it is possible for any boxer currently to surpass armstrongs resume, you would have to fight atleast 80 times trough 6 divisions fighting a lot of great boxers and winning almost all of it while looking great and even then you still wouldnt surpass it.

Strongly disagree - they had fights to the finish - not 48 min tops with 12 of those being 1 min breathers. John L. Sullivan's training routine for a finish fight is online, try it for yourself sometime and tell me again they didn't train hard.

 

that is the way things are.. I am convinced a guy like Rahman would stop Dempsey in one round, but don't tell that to the so called "boxing historians" who think watching barely viewable grainy film tells them how good someone was 100 years ago.

 

And the "real" boxing historians know that it would be Rahman who would be lucky to see round 2 in a fight with Dempsey.

Rahman would make Dempsey look like a guy he picked out of the crowd to beat on. Why don't you tell me what 147 lb guy could take 40 rounds of ODLH's jab? There are none. With a nearly bare hand?

Fighters back then wrestled as much as they punched, that's why they could go for 40 rounds. If you put a 1940's fighter in with JMM, Juan would throw one surgical and mostly totally unblocked 12 punch combo and the fight would be over in 30 seconds. Those guys were great for their time, but that time is looooong past and the skills they had would be comical today.

Armstrong held the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight championship at the same time taking on all comers. That's five weightclasses today. Neither Jones, Calzaghe, nor Mayweather could do that. Armstrong at least got in the ring with SRR and he gets points just for that. The greatest today won't even fight each other. Fighters like Armstrong earned their stripes. This is why those fighters can't match what Armstrong did:

Calzaghe only fought between two weights.
Jones would have to hold all of his titles between middlweight and heavyweight.
Mayweather would have to hold all of his titles gained between 130 and 154 and currently defend them which he won't even fight the guys in front of him.

It might look harder now because they're more divisions but these guys got it easy because it's more belts.
