I try to stay out of it when MAG goes into full-blown troll mode, but sometimes it's difficult.

Probably not that well, but I think he would have given them tougher fights than Duran did when they were fighting their fight. I always thought Pernell's style would have beaten Duran. Fighting his fight and using defense and his rangeto land his punches. And Pernell wouldn't have even been moving around the ring-sort of like Benitez when he fought Duran. And I think Pernell hurts Duran with bodypunches, which is going to get some people upset. But I think his style would be terrible for Duran.

let me put it another way. I think Whitaker vs. Benitez is a toss up at 154, maybe leaning toward Wilfred since he fought 154 great and Whitaker did not, but Duran was outclassed by Benitez at 154, regardless of the scores not showing that. Chavez would have been a tough fight for Duran and not a sure win, and Nelson? Yes great but Duran would have probably beaten him at lightweight, but I think it would have been a war. The fact is Whitaker is better than anyone Duran fought at lightweight, and the styles which beat Duran is similar to Whitaker. Ramirez/Duran? Who wouldn't favor Duran over Jose. McGirt at welt? I can never pick McGirt over Duran, I thought McGirt was overrated as a fighter. Acting cocky after his fight with Davis for Taylor to sign the contract and then pretty much giving up after round one because of his usually excuse of a left rotator cuff. As for Roger Mayweather, he might have been tough for Duran. I always thought Duran was open for a right hand and that Arguello might have surprised people with a win over Roberto.

It is just expressing my opinion about Duran. He is great but his style was open to losses against guys like Floyd and Whitaker. There are not many guys who would beat him, so that is not too much of an insult. But that caliber and style would beat Duran every time.

I don't mind if people insult what I say. That is what the boxing forum is all about. It is all in fun. I don't think it is bull**** though since there are facts to what I say about Roberto and boxers. The things I say about Duran not being able to fight a an "elite" boxer or greats fighter who was sharp and fast is well documented with facts.

How did this turn into Duran-Whitaker?

Well he did show himself a borderline great beating Laguana twice to become champ, deserving to regain part of the championship against Ishimatsu, dominant against old Ortiz, beating future champ Watt, beating ex-champ Hernandez, being a European champ when it meant beating the best Europe had to offer

Still his longevity isn't great so your argument has merit

And what exactly is fighting their fight?

Would Leonard be running around the ring and taunting Whitaker? He would probably be right in his face imposing his physical advantages which he could not do against Duran.

Does Whitaker last the distance against Hagler? I wouldn't count on it and he probably wouldn't have made it as close.

Duran wasn't affected by Barkley's body punches so Whitaker with his very modest KO ability likely wouldn't "hurt" him. Score with punches yes but it's Duran who would be doing the hurting.

If you want to think that Whitaker would beat Duran then I have no problem whatsoever with that. It is all speculation. But don't act like he was any greater on Duran when all your criticism could be said about him too.

It was a tough style at a high weight and after a lot of hard fights for Duran. Whitaker had his problems against a Puerto Rican as well, Wilfredo Rivera who by the way looked awful against a 50 year old Carlos Palomino. I'm not so sure if that era was better than Duran's.

There is no way to favour Chavez over Duran at 147. None. Roger's chin of glass would have been found out in about 2 rounds of action. That is said with as little offense intended to a good fighter, but he did not take a punch well to say the least. Duran to his part knew how to deliver a punch very well.

Essentially you're saying that Duran beats every opponent Whitaker faced. We can't necessarily say the same for Whitaker.

Duran absolutely could be hurt to the body or head by Whitaker's punches, especially if he was pushed at the weight a bodyattack will affect him more. People make the mistake of thinking a smaller man can't hurt you at lower weight classes because you've taken shots from bigger men at higher weight classes. That extra weight of Duran's helped him take those punches and make no mistake those shots had an effect on him. Whitaker wouldn't score a bodyshot KO, no, but his bodypunching would take its toll on Duran as the fight progressed.

Duran can go in and compete against the likes of Hagler and Barkley while Whitaker wouldn't, not because he's better but because he carries the 160lb weight allot better than most of his fans admit.

The problem is we never truly saw anyone make an impact on Duran with body-punching. I'm sure Whitaker would land scoring shots which would even look like they hurt, but I just don't see Duran "slowing" down from anything Whitaker would do. After all, Azumah Nelson was there swinging punches in the 12th as fresh as he did in the first.

Sure does. Look at the incredible shape he is in here:

Whitaker didn't look too bad at 154:

Against Hagler, Duran does carry the weight well though. Lets look at the below footage and imagine for a miniute we didn't know Duran was once a LW/WW. Does he look small? Not incredible. Does he look out of shape? Certainly not, not ripped but not out of shape

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3fZ_bSAy8Y[/ame]

Granted Whitaker, but he just isn't as stocky as Duran, he doesn't carry the muscle or have a dense enough bone structure. But who knows maybe Whitaker would beat the Barkley's/Moore's and win rounds on the way to a loss against Hagler.

Agree with you on Duran having the much better opponents ofcourse

Duran also weighed 156 pounds for that fight while Whitaker weighed 155 for the Vasquez fight. The difference of an entire pound. Duran looked like a slob whenever he weighed in at 160 and tended to run out of gas. Obviously he didn't carry that amount of weight very well.

Didn't Duran do that himself by not granting a KB a rematch ?, MSG, Ken were all for it in 73 - Duran wasn't and perhaps with good reason ( which he freely admits himself ).

KB isn't overrated at all, Duran himself would be the first to admit that.
