If he loses to Machida, is Jon Jones still the 2012 fighter of the year?

Bader... Rua... Rampage... does he even need to beat Lyoto to be the top fighter in MMA for this past year?

It's crazy to think he has all those wins this year.

It depends on how he loses. I don't think he would be though.

Why would he be fighter of the year if he loses the belt in December? :patsch

Nah, you ain't the FOTD is you lose a big fight that year. The FOTD must be someone who's had a glorious year all-round. If Jones loses, I'd vote for Anderson Silva. He blew me away with his performances vs two top, tough challengers in Belfort and Okami.

If Machida knocks Bones out - we could see not on the UFC title but the title of fighter of the year go to Lyoto.

I like Machida's chances in this fight. Bones can beat him if he sticks to his grappling and throws - but if he kick boxes with Lyoto he is going to get his lights put out.

No way does Machida get FOTY.. This award belongs to Silva or Frankie Edgar, but I can't choose between the two at this moment.

I also think it's not in Jones' best interest to strike with Lyoto.. He would be wise to grapple from the get go, and grind down the master counter striker. The more I think about Jones/Machida, the more evenly matched they seem.. I still think Suga Rashad has the best shot to juke his way on the inside and score some takedowns and heavy hands.

I like that choice. For some reason i almost feel Bones and Spider are too good that they're almost exempt from choice Frankie isnt a freak nor a genius, yet he's performed way beyond what anyone expected from him

Not if he loses. Frankie might get the award or even MAchida after beating the most hyped guy in MMA. This award is still up for grabs.

How can someone be "too good" for fighter of the year.

I can certainly the argument that Jones already has enough credit in the bank that should he lose to Machida (which let's remember is an almost unprecedented fourth fight of the year for a modern elite fighter) his destruction of Bader, Rua and Jackson still makes for a better resume than any other fighter. As others have said, a lot would depend on how he looks in defeat.

I don't think Edgar deserves to be in the talk to be honest. He's only 1-0-1 for the year and came very close to losing both fights against Maynard. To me if its not Jones then at the moment I'd go with Anderson Silva - for the first time since 2007 he's finished both his opponents early and impressively plus he's had a breakthrough year as a superstar in Brazil. If Henderson beats Shogun or Diaz beats Penn they'd both be in with a shout as well.
