[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNaDouUZGzU[/ame] Interesting footage of ali sparing and then talking about it in the studio about his exhibition matches in Russia in June, 1978 just before he fought spinks This first russian guy beat the great Teofilo Stevenson twice. Ali is not in shape here, but its interesting to see east euros 12 years before they could become pro get a chance to spar with a legend like ali
Pyotr Zayev, Yevgeny Gortskov were the other two guys. I wonder how they would have all done had they been allowed to go pro, decent pros ?, champs ?, or just not good enough ?
the russian amateur teams of the 70's was a great what if. the american heavyweights were much better than today's but I bet that some of those guys would have won a few upsets if they had been allowed to compete as pros.
Seriously not surprised this got no replys, you guys just seem to want to go over old ground all the time, ****s sake i thought this would be an interesting subject, but hey obviously theres another louis or tyson thread to look at
Vysotsky may have developed into a good pro, with the proper guidance, he did not embarrass himself in there Ali always made you think he was not trying but he stated it was more serious than it looked
Vysotsky does look good, busy and quick, if not overpowerful, mixes up his punches, a little like Povetkin looked earlier in his career. But as Ali alludes to, 15 rounds is another sport compared to 3 rounds. It's just so hard to tell how he would have turned out as a pro, though he obviously had a lot of talent.
I don't think Vysotsky does look that good, this is the Ali that lost to Spinks, and he looks to have far more quality Vysotsky, who looks pretty basic. I expected allot more from a man that beat Stevenson myself, what stage of Vysotsky's career was this? Joe no worries, you raised a good thread and people do swarm to the old arguments
He's in there sparring and throwing little pitty pat punches. Guy was a two fisted power puncher, a bigger stronger version of Frazier. First 30 seconds [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzn9sXperFA[/ame] He was retired in less than 2 years from then.
I thought he looked decent, fast hands, nice selection of punches, but it is rather timid sparring. Ali is doing a lot of nothing, just protecting himself. I am not sure if we can tell a lot from this footage. It seems like he is pulling his punches a bit.
Sorry forgot, Ali is invincible and destroys everyone. Clown. Igor is 6'0 and looks quite heavily muscled. I'd guess he's between 215-225, probably closer to 225. He's a pressure fighter and two fisted puncher like i said and i also think it's a fair assumption that he's somewhat adept at getting inside against bigger opponent's, like the 6'6 Stevenson. Look at how 'muscular' the 5"10 205lb Frazier is... This content is protected
