He was 37 years old against Vitali. Obviously, 37 is not prime for any heavyweight fights. But's it also isn't ancient. We are now seeing fighters in decent shape past age 40. Lennox had 43 fights, which isn't a devastating career.

Lewis was 256 pounds against Vitali. He was 250 against Frans Botha. 6 pounds is enough to say he's out of shape? I think 6 pounds is meaningless for a heavyweight.

Lewis had not been in the ring for 12 months. Well, he also wasn't in the ring for 9 months between his fight against Ray Mercer and Oliver McCall in 1995/1996.

Or maybe did the three factors combine to produce an out of shape Lewis in june 2003?

Not as much as Vitali was for Arreola. I know that much.

While Lewis was 1-2% heavier than at his best it's a bunch of BS to say he was "fat" or "out of shape".

What one has to say though is that Lewis was mentally in a good place. I've never seen a more committed, more passionate and more risk-taking Lewis. The good thing (for us fans) was that he grossly underestimated Vitali and that's why it turned out to be a killer fight.

Compare his mental attitude to the **** safety first fight he brought against Tua or the terrible hugfests vs. Holyfield. Lewis was only an exciting fighter when he believed he was vastly superior to his opponent -- that's when he took risks and let sparks fly.

  5. I think he was slightly out of shape, yes.

He was only 6lbs heavier than a year previous but he looks a tad softer all over, obviously muscle is heavier than fat.

He wasn't as soft as (say) Bowe was for the Holyfield rematch compared to his condition in the first fight.

He was in good shape for his age. A few extra pounds on a 6'5 frame is nothing really.

Lewis TKO6 Vitali (got in before the trolls)

How out of shape do you have to be to turn the entire atmosphere a dull gray, because even the air is depressed? :verysad

Vitali blitzed Lewis early because he surprised Lewis with how good a boxer he was. Lennox I don't think was ever in a fight were he wasn't the better technical boxer, let alone when he faced another Goliath. If Lewis was out of shape he would not have been able to survive the early onslaught and come back into the fight against a beast like Vitali.
