GBP blocked Top Rank from doing the Donaire-Narvaez fight in California

However, Golden Boy, which was promoting last week's Hopkins-Dawson fight at nearby Staples Center and didn't want the competition of another major card a week later, blocked Top Rank from going to the arena. It called on AEG, which runs Staples Center and Home Depot Center -- and also owns a stake in Golden Boy -- to block the fight."

 

I still consider Top Rank is the better promoter of the two.

 

GBP will eventually take over...GBP is pretty much on evelevel with Top Rank but has only been around for a fraction of the time. :deal

 

GBP should concentrate on their WWE events instead of bringing down the competition.

 

I dunno if California boxing fans will start boycotting GBP.

 

Why would they? GBP is huge in CA.

 

GBP were scared that Donaire vs Narvaez would sell too many tickets.

 

When you have B-Hop and virtually all east coast fighters fighting on the opposite side of the country and you sell less than 3,000 tickets in LA and less than 100k PPV's it shows you've ****ed up. Top Rank knows how to do their job and that is promote.

 

Hopkins isn't marketable...Most black fighters now a days aren't.

 

The PPV was HBO's fault, not Golden Boy's. The fact that it was on the west coast is the same reason Top Rank is stuck putting Donaire on in the east: another promoter (Main Events) prevented the company from holding it near the home bases of the headlining fighters.

B-Hop vs Pascal had the 2nd highest HBO rating since Arreola vs Klitschko and how is it HBO's fault that GBP couldn't sell more PPV's? Kathy Duva blocked GBP from the Prudential Center because she didn't want them ruining her perfectly run market. GBP is well known for comping tickets etc etc. The original intentions of this fight was to put Pascal on the undercard and have it in Candada, but B-Hop refused. I don't know, but if i was GBP I would have thought twice about LA. Also, New York has the highest second Filipino population outside of CA. There is a possibility it may work.

 

The only reason it was on PPV in the first place was because HBO is out of money. That's the network's fault, not Golden Boy's. The fight also received absolutely no promotional support from the network whatsoever; it probably received less than most World Championship Boxing events. Above and beyond this, it was also a fight that everyone recognized would likely turn into a stinker.

Additionally, why is Kathy Duva blocking GBP from using the Prudential Center a matter of smart business, but GBP doing the same thing with Donaire-Narvaez not?

Good points, but I have no idea why GBP didn't make Hopkins fight in Canada instead where he could have fought in front of over 15k and possibility made a few more dollars. I I would think because Top Rank isn't known like GBP to comp ticket sales. The Home Depot Center has been sold quite well by Arum in the past without the need to sour the market. It seems the only logical reasoning on GBP's behalf was that they wanted to save face.
