Ouch. To be honest, I think you very much overate a lot of these fighters at this weight around this time. You really do put a lot of them on a pedestal where they just don't belong. You elevate a win, which in the grand scheme of boxing history, is pretty far below average at best, into some sort of great legendary scalp. There are plenty of more worthy fighters for the HOF than Ottke in my opinion. As stated, I'd certainly have Benn and Eubank in front of him in the line.
Who have I overated? B Mitchell - 2 time WBA SMW champ He beat - #1 Liles (something Ward is praised for doing) by KO. Liles was linear champ and on a winning run of 8 world title fights with Nunn being a victim - drew with future 2 weight champ Girard - beat Siaca twice who went on to become WBA SMW champ who beat Mundine - beat former MW champ JC Green who beat a prime Joppy before Joppy was beaten by Trinidad or Hopkins. Mitchell only lost by SD to Ottke and was only ever beaten clearly once as a SMW. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heres an old post of mine about Ottke 1. It was only Ottkes 13th fight when he won a world title Consider how A Ward is raved about. Ward has had 24 fights, by this time Ottke had made 11 defences. If Johnson beats Froch he will be in the S6 finals and if Ward was to beat Johnson it would be considered a big win, but Ottke beat Johnson at SMW back in 99. 2. Ottke made 21 title defences and was a winner of 22 world title fights Consider how Hopkins MW reign is thought to be special yet Ottke had more SMW title victories than Hopkins had MW victories and overall fought better opposition 3. Ottkes reign was impressive when you consider he wasnt a puncher and didnt have an equalizer in his fists. With the exception of Johnson who was finding his feet at the time, I can't say I rate any of those fighters too highly. Holding an alphabet title in a shallow division automatically doesn't make a boxer great. Also, a fighter doesn't get bonus points for being feather fisted.
I watched him fight Reid , Starie , Brewer and Mitchell I thought he lost three of the above clearly and had the Starie fight very close. Not sure how somebody only fighting in their own back yard with their own personal ref and judges can be allowed to build such a record. Definately not worthy of anything other than the ' hometown champion of the world' title.
remember when sky covered the david starie fight. they asked him about calzaghe. he pretended he didn't even know who he was. the fact he retired without even seeking out the fight sums him up. no way a hall of famer. :bart
He did seek out a fight with Calzaghe, but Calzaghe didn't want to travel even though Ottke was the undisputed no.1 so you are wrong.
