A lot of people rag on fighters like Calzaghe and Wlad for their level of competition. However, those guys fought the best of what was around and collected every major title out there. The same cannot be said of Lucian Bute. He's been defending that IBF belt that Calzaghe basically gave away for several years now and has yet to beat a top level fighter.

Now he's facing a 42 year old, faded ex champion who has basically been a .500 fighter for the last 13 years and is coming off a loss. What's worse is that i keep seeing this guy pop on p4p lists despite his lack of credentials. Bute seems like a good guy and is a talented fighter. However, is going on 32 now. He's in a talented division and he needs to step up and fight some real fighters, and not continue to fight B level journeymen who have already been beaten up by the elite fighters in his division. Let's all hope that he fights the winner of the Ward/Froch fight next.

People bang on about Ottke's reign being a joke yet his first 6-7 title defences were far superior to Bute's.

I can sympathise to an extent, the top fighters in his division have been tied up on the Super 6 for the last couple of years. However, he has by no means fought the best of what's left, so perhaps that's a moot point?

I figure that he's being carefully managed and kept from any real threats until the super 6 is over, when he can cash in against the winner. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go after the loser of the tournament first, then the winner if he comes through that.

The way I see it, Bute gets plenty of heat for his level of opposition and it is quite telling that a drained 42 year old will be his biggest challenge to date.

I find it sad that his management has so little confidence in his ability that they are unwilling to give him some decent opposition. It reminds me a lot about Joe Calzaghe's early years as champion. It's sad because Bute might prove to be a great fighter and at some point we might look back and say that his prime was wasted fighting clubfighters.

You're just playing dumb, aren't you? Bute clearly outperformed Ward in both the Bika and the Miranda fights, outperformed Froch vs. Magee, made a huge statement in knocking out the ultra-durable Andrade to set the record straight, and now fights the Glen Johnson that gave Froch, Cloud and Dawson very tough fights in the past few years and knocked out Green, outperforming the Oakland Warrior. He also beat Berrio, a The Ring top5 SMW at the time so he's 2-0 over guys who hold a W over current WBO champ Stieglitz.

It seems thet the Bute haters (or simply Ward, Froch, Kessler etc fans) are so terrified that Lucian might KO Glen or simply put on a performance to remember that they rather go ahead of that experience and discredit a legitimate fight. Ironically of course Glen Johnson is a far bigger threat to the Romanian than Kelly Pavlik at this point, and people thought that was a more legit fight. And... there you have it. Show me a better resume at SMW.

No. But would any answer make my post - or Bute's resume - illegitimate?

Are you the kind of guy who's short on argument therefore asks questions about avatar, location, fan or not etc?

2007 tries to fight Froch for IBF eliminator, Froch declines.

Right before the super 6 tries to fight Froch, tournament happens

Bute not invited to Super 6

Bute tries to fight Steiglitz, declines

Bute tries to fight Kessler, fights Steiglitz instead

Johnson was seen as a real threat to Froch, gave him one of his toughest fights and Froch got big respect for the win and now people act like Johnson is a joke.

Bute haters are perhaps the most irrational in the sport. Serious question who could Bute have fought that he hasn't?

    :good :good :thumbsup :thumbsup

No nuthugger stop making things up. Johnson is a game guy but his record at 168 is miserable.

Having said that, Johnson will be Bute's best win.

This is what I'm talking about. All those big wins you are talking about are against B level fighters who have already gotten beaten up by the top level fighters in the division. Now you're trying to hype up this fight with Johnson. Johnson is 42 years old. He's been fading late in fights as of lately. He is clearly past it and is coming off a loss. Bute is being hyped as a p4p fighter, yet we're supposed to be excited about him facing a 42 year old, washed up fighter who has lost 2 of his last 3 fights? The standard for Bute has to be higher than that.

He's just building up his KO's. He thinks he'll knock out Johnson and be in a position to fight either Ward or Froch for a bigger pay day.
