Why don't black Americans dominate the top ten heavyweight rankings anymore??

Eddie Chambers and Tony Thompson are black right? If so that is about it. 11 thru 20 starting to show a few more bros, but not much.

Back in the 70's, 80's, 90's you were hard pressed to find a single white guy in the heavy top ten and they were usually eliminated as soon as they were tested. What's changed?

Because Slavic countries are not communist anymore, Poland, ukraine, belarus, Russia are now all legal to fight.

Hence the decline in Afrian American boxers.

 

Less Amercian boxing gyms and quality trainers, blacks focusing on other careers or sports - the same reason there aren't great Jewish boxers anymore, less blk poverty and ofcourse a strong Eastern European Contingent

 

Because the best american black athletes play other sports like football or basketball

 

Less quick-flick muscle cells in the Europeon flock. Reflexes trumps power most times in boxing, maybe, maybe not.

 

Its just a cycle . They will again and then wont again . Depending on circumstances . There is one hell of a pile of people in ASIA . My bet is these countries will have a crack soon .:bbb

The main reason is this;

The United States has more people in prison then England, Russia, and China combined, a great deal of them Black. Plus, since most of these prisons are privatized, the lot of them no longer support in-prison boxing programs, and once they get out, many communities no longer have neighborhood boxing gyms.
Look at Detroit. Kronk is no more, and many other states are the same. Blame it on the government and sell-outs like Stewart who follow the money and instead train in Russia.

 

I don't agree its a cycle, I think its a combination of the European's are now *in it*, combined with the decline in HW boxing's overall popularity in the US.

Two factors.

But can you imagine a world class Chinese or Japanese heavyweight contender? What a shock that would be.

 

No boxing gyms in the poor neighborhoods anymore. Much, much, much more money and celebrity to be had in basketball, without the risk of brain damage. Do the math. It's a pretty simple equation.

 

Boxing isn't as popular.

 

or basketball and football are way more popular and lucrative for young athletes to get into.
Not to mention every school in the country has a bball and football team and boxing gyms are hard as crap to find

 

going by boxrec top 20, 8 are from former eastern bloc countries and one is from cuba, in the past the best from cuba havent gone pro.
If you take all the former eastern bloc boxers out, the top ten has 4 black americans and 9 in the top 20.
So this is clearly the biggest reason.
The second reason I would suggest, is the fact that although the USA has produced some excellent hw boxers such as Ali, holmes, frazier, tyson, holyfield, foreman what USA doesn't really have a history of producing is the super heavyweight african american boxer, Bowe is really the only really big really good boxer. Recently the average size of a successful boxer in the hw division has really increased.
In the past, when hws were usually around 190-210 boxers like steve cunningham, eric fields, Johnathon banks etc could have done really well, but now they would be too small to really be successful

 

One of the top amateur super heavyweights is chinese, but it is unlikely that asia will dominate above middleweight
