So you put a large emphasis on h2h?

I don't view rocky as someone who would be particularly difficult for an elite level true heavyweight to defeat.

im going to watch joe louis fight. if he doesnt lose any h2h against any other top fighter he must be amazing, considering he still alot smaller than the modern heavyweights.

Rocky is a tough fight for ANYONE. Trust me. They would get out of that ring never wanting to face him again win or lose.

    To what end?

I've seen a lot of rocky footage. I've seen what I can on langford and dempsey and i've seen an awful lot on holyfield and frazier.

Could you provide a footage comparison backing up your argument that rocky can do what dempsey can, but better?

Could you do the same to show sam is just as hittable as rocky was?

Regarding holy and frazier, I just think they're too big and too skilled.

Rocky is perhaps the best conditioned heavyweight in history and i'd happily buy into him being the p4p hardest puncher in history also.

I can't imagine holy taking his heart as he did with tyson but I can imagine him outfighting rocky with better punch selection and movement.

Frazier wins an awesome war imo.

I'm not trying to convince anyone of the above, i'm giving my opinion. You seem a bit more invested in that you believe i'm tragically underrating the rock.

If you wanna convince me give it a shot, as it is, h2h is the main thing holding rocky back in my overall rankings. Even then he's safely in the top ten.

When I watch fights of his I find myself thinking he's the best actual boxer in history. P4p falling short to sugar, but there isn't anyone past or present i'd put in a ring with joe expecting them to win.

Good List Luf and I think you made some good observations. Obviously I disagree with some parts of it... Examples being Liston for sure, and maybe even Louis being too high in the h2h rankings. That said, overall I think it's a pretty darn good list imo.

I will say this though, I would also pick Marciano to beat Dempsey, Frazier, Holy and some others.... Just my opinion though.

That's fine; if everyone had the same list we'd have quite a boring forum :good

Yeah some like rocky h2h, some don't... Unfortunately for us we'll never see him against those names.

What he achieved was actually legendary imo. However from a h2h point of view i'm convinced about his ability against heavier opposition.

I'm sorry, but an incredibly rough start in my view. In boxing, especially at HW anything can happen. One punch can change HW history, yet you have Louis going undefeated against 39 of the best HW's on the planet. Louis actually lost against some of these guys in his career, and almost lost to those who weren't even HWs. It honestly seems like the world ending in 2012 is more likely than Louis going 39-0 against such impeccable opposition.

Liston... the guy didn't win through adversity in any meaningful fight.

The first list is good and fair to your credit, though. I don't see how in the world Langford ranks ahead of Marciano in a H2H list. I thought Marciano's problem was he already too much of a midget now this 5'6 HW is a more viable H2H force? Marciano already beat 2 of the guys on that H2H list anyhow, that's the funny thing about it.

Anything can happen. Says it all.

His only meaningful loss he brutally avenged.

As for langford, I think he scored evenly with rocky but got the nod by virtue of me picking him to beat rocky :good

H2h lists are fun aren't they :) do you have your own?

I was going to compile one awhile ago but just said eff it. Yeah, Louis avenged his losses. But he had losses. Now he's going against an ATG HW 39 times out and we're expected him to go undefeated. This doesn't seem a little far-fetched to you? It doesn't seem like you're expecting too much of him? I can't even envision Louis beating Ali let alone going 39-0 against the best HWs in the history of sport. With that logic, you'd expect great fighters to run off undefeated records all the time.

What did Langford did to accord himself so well in HW H2H threads (Not P4P). What film displays him looking so special where he should picked to beat an undefeated sub 200 lb H2H monster? It seems way too presumptuous to me... I know it's all speculative.

I like your first list, I dont care for your second - but that is no insult to you, I just despise h2h lists in general. Things have changed so much its not really fair to compare old time boxers to their new age counterparts. It is better to appreciate boxers in context imo. Dont forget that while Joe Louis was a massive puncher, he was also wearing 6 ounce gloves, which are half the size of the gloves modern HWs use.. Imagine taking a right hand from a 240lb Lennox in a glove that size :scaredas:

Anyways, here's a hypothetical question: had Vitali beaten Lennox, would he have gotten credit by most or would it be written off as an old/shot Lennox? What would his ranking have been had he won that fight.
