Hey, it's time for another "Jimmy Young vs" thread...this time vs lightheavy great (IMO) John Conteh. Since Jimmy wasn't what we'd call a "big heavyweight" at least not as physically imposing as some, I don't think the weight and size differences are that significant. I'd be most interested in your opinions.

...Which disease or life threatening ailment will Conteh have? If none, Conteh, by UD.

Jimmy wins a clear decision. Pound for pound,John has greater firepower but a prime Jimmy has at least 20 lbs weight advantage over John in his 'heavyweight days' of 1971-73.

A perfectly healthy, two handed Conteh.

 If I could get Bronson, Freeman and Walken saying that same line, I'd put it on a loop...then I'd play it...for telemarketers. :hey

I change my vote to Conteh, by brutal, one-punch knockout.

Of your two points, I'd love a loop of the "i like chicken" line..for posterity..
..of the second point, well,... your first point was great.

Young smothers Conteh's attempts to work and ,ekes out a boring ,scrappy decision over the frustrated Brit.
    Another stinker for J Y.

When John was trying to be a beefed up heavyweight approx 14 stone mark, the added weight blunted the razor sharpness he had at his natural lt heavy best, thus he struggled to a degree with movers like Billy Aird, Les Stevens, and of course had is first loss (Controvercial Points) to Eddie Duncan - a Jimmy young Type mobile sniper, Conteh would usually get vicious, and that would be enough to put these mid-level fightes in a defensive shell, But Young is a much better class
early career Sparring with Frazier gave him a survivalist edge, it stood him in good stead later on against messers Lyle Foreman and Norton, - a razor sharp Lt Heavy conteh will not be strong enough to budge a defensive heavyweight like young, a beefed up conteh would probably be a bit too sluggish in the later rounds, he would probably shake Jimmy on a few occassions, outbox him with that superb Jab an Double Jab, on occassions and indeed Have some of Jimmy's Snipeing miss by dint of his Cobra'esque head movement, Conteh, is not a Lumbering Lyle - Foreman Behemoth, and he does have that vicious streak, incorporating "Careless Headwork" when getting frustrated, But young i think is too good and too big not to be able to ride out these periodic storms...and answer back, There may not be too much in it at the end perhaps due to Youngs style of Snipeing for success and not looking for an earlier Trench Warfare Resolution. Jimmy Young on Points for me,

Conteh was an excellent fighter but Young was a master who learned his trade in the school of hard knock gyms and the fast lane of professional heavyweight boxing in the 70's

Jimmy takes it clean and clear

Funny but I always enjoyed Jimmy's fights, he was a sweat pea Whitaker enlarged, Joe Louis used to say" he can run but not hide" Jimmy could hide behind his defense and blast out quick sporadic counters....After the Norton fight he did not train at at vs 10-fight Ocasio it was almost like Ali vs 6 fight Leon...but this was not Jimmy Young
