Sugar Ray is able to land 180 seconds worth of combinations from round one to round fifteen and barely takes a shot in return. Due to a lot of fans having their throats penetrated by Robinson's love stick, they ignore the fact that he was weak defensively. Leonard had an amazing offensive arsenal but he was also hard to hit and La Motta would never be able to land all that crude ****. Leonard all day, every day!
Over 15 rounds and at 160 La Motta would have his moments but would lose on points. It wouldnt be as one sided as the above.
Good shout,I just think peak Ray always finds a way,no matter who's in front of him.That's assuming it's after he's learned from the first Duran fight not to fight LaMotta's fight.
Lamotta did win one of his fights with Robinson by decision, including a knockdown. This is when Robinson was on a 10 year winning streak at Welterweight. So I can't see this being too one sided, especially if they fought more than once. SRL by decision though, on most nights. By the way, I am a big admirer of SRL and think both he and Hearns would beat Mayweather all over the ring 10 times out of 10 at Welterweight.
This would be a mismatch. If these two fought 10 times, Leonard would win 9 or 10 of them. Leonard is too fast, too good defensively and has too few personal problems/issues relative to LaMotta.
He scored a clean knockdown in his second fight against the untouchable SRR in Robinson's welterweight heyday. Although Robinson beat him in the other fights they had during that period, as well as later for the middleweight title, in epic fashion. This was Robinson's only defeat during his true peak years.
LaMotta by UD. Leonard didn't have the ability to box off the back-foot like Robinson. When he used excessive lateral movement it was mostly for show. He had to be planted to punch, and that wouldn't bode well against LaMotta. I didn't expect the thread to go too much differently than it has been in the General Forum, though. You kids don't know any better. Also, what you peons don't know is that LaMotta arguably won 2 of those bouts with Robinson, and the only time he was ever beaten badly was in their final fight, when he was struggling so badly to make the weight that his stamina was pretty much shot. Still, he managed to give Robinson a tough fight (behind his jab and underrated defensive skills, no less) throughout the first half before wilting in the latter rounds. Afterwards, he moved up to Lt. Heavyweight and never fought at Middleweight again.
