REVISED: Under 185lb Tournament, Semi Finals # 1 Rocky Marciano vs # 5 Sam Langford

Moore stated that going into the Marciano fight his legs were gone .
Watch Moore a few years earlier ,and then tell me he was as good against Marciano.The fact that he was successful late in his career just emphasises how good he was in his prime , it does not mean he was prime at 40 years old.

 

I can't see any 5'6 185lb midget surviving a Rocky Marciano blow to be honest :good

It would certainly back up my theory Langford get's slightly overrated in a h2h sense at heavyweight. I can't see 5'6 Langford slugging it out with Marciano and Dempsey and coming out alive.

 

Nevertheless he had the longest unbeaten un of his career until he met Marciano. So, acting as if he wasn´t a formidable opponent and that he has when it comes to power and finishing ability similarities with Langford has not much weight here. :deal

Who knocked better ranked heavy competition? I think it's Sam.

 

Sam never beat anyone as good as Ezzard Charles or Jersey Joe Walcott. Jeanette, McVea, Wills...Sorry they can't touch those guys when it comes to pure ability/skills/fundamentals. Wills comes the closest in ability, but Wills also beat Langford about 10 times.

 

But you said no one could survive a Sam Langford blow?

Also i was talking about MOORE's and Sam's finishing ability/competition, not Rocky, who obviously has a better resume of finished guys above the LHW limit.

 

He wasn't a blind old man when a raw Harry Wills beat him in 1914.

Yes, I'd have to agree Sam finished better fighters. But Moore's resume is right up there! Knocking out Harold Johnson, Cocoa Kid, Lloyd Marshall, Jimmy Bivins, Jack Chase and many others is no joke!

 

Yeah, Moore is definitely tops as a finisher but IMO cannot compare to Sam on a raw power level or in finishing ability, i think bodhi was arguing otherwise

 

Well said M. No man at 40 as Moore was,could be in his "prime". Heavier yes, but nature must take away your reflex. Moore was in his prime probably in the 1945-48 era as a great LH.
