Did James Toney have any chance to beat Roy Jones?

Do you think Toney would have been able to put on a better fight and trouble Jones had he took the fight so seriously, or didn't have trouble with the weight? Or was it just a bad style match up?

Still amazing to see Jones dominate a fighter like Toney and make him look like a buffoon. With all the technical skills Toney had, he still didn't win one round.

 

Prime Jones just had too much tricks for any version of Toney.

 

Of course he did with his skill I say yes.

I'm not sure about his weight ,but when didn't he have weight issues ? For all his undiscipline he sure as hell managed to scrape up a nice hall of fame career ..How many fighters disciplined or not could be that good ? He just met a once in a lifetime fighter thats all but he always had a chance imo ..

 

No. Jones was too fast for him. The speed difference was too large. If Toney trained harder he would be a little faster. Maybe James would have more stamina. But that wouldnt be enough to change the result of the fight.

Even without the horrific weight drain, I think Toney would always struggle with a super middle weight RJJ. Terrible style match-up for Lights Out. Toney had to chase him around the ring, and Roy was so quick and so skilled at that point Toney could barely lay a glove on him.

Toney shined against guys with moderate to good handspeed. When he was up against Nunn his slickness and old school defence was exploited and if he hadn't knocked Nunn out, in the 11th, he had lost that fight on points CLEARLY.

Jones was quicker than Nunn and even harder to hit. There is only a handful of fighters that I would pick to match a prime Jones, head to head, and Toney ain't one of them.

 

No. Toney was severely weight-drained, more even than in his other fights, and he didn't prepare well - he broke camp and didn't take Roy Jones seriously. 'I'm just gonna knock him out'. But Roy would have beaten any version of Toney that evening. Roy would probably have beaten any SMW that evening.

An in shape Toney would have been faster and would have had more gas in his tank, he would have given Roy some trouble, but at the end of the day Roy beats Toney 10 times out of 10. And that says something about how good Roy was in his prime.

 

Toney lost the first six rounds against Nunn, but he gradually slowed him down by always going to the body. James landed some terrific body shots on Nunn (and he did take some hard shots upstairs in return, in order to land these body shots). Toney set up that KO.

 

I wont believe the weigh issues.

They try to say Toney gained 50lbs or so, and lost 50lbs in 3 months.

Nobody cares if you want to believe the weight issue or not, but the weight loss is a well-documented fact. Toney lost 40+ lbs in about 6 weeks prior to the fight.
