Hence why I made a big deal out of it in the Ecyclopedia entry :good When do you ever see Starling beaten on the inside AND buzzed? That's how good a peak Curry was.
Got round to watching Linares/DeMarco. The HBO commentary was shocking, started nuthugging Linares before the first bell - especially Lampley and Kellerman. Then at the halfway point they had to start backtracking as DeMarco opened up a few cuts (the one on the nose was nasty :scaredas I'd read that it'd pretty much being a shutout before DeMarco got the stoppage in the 11th but the Mexican picked up at least 3 of the first 10 rounds and was really laying into Linares in the 11th. I know not everyone's a fan of Linares but he showed great heart to fight on with them cuts and even in the 11th was always fighting back. The lack of power is a worry though.
I've heard some ****ed up commentating in my time but that took the ****ed up cookie.atsch Linares is a very nice, skilled fighter with plenty of heart but as you say lacked power. To compare him with SRR is as bad as it gets, especially when most of Ray's shots looked likely to take your head off or pulverize your liver.
Max always goes overboard with his comparisons. Few years back it was "Katsidis could be the new Marciano" atsch
Ive always thought of Katsidis as a new Arturo Gatti type, and even though he wasnt quite as good as Gatti, he lived up to the name, with the balls hes shown over and over, since his bloody brutal battle over Amonsot:good
Wharton vs Benn was another excellent Wharton fight. Benn showed his underrated boxing skills here, boxed a masterclass.
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam Vs Edgar Sosa. This is probably just about the biggest schooling the current Pong could feasibly dish out on a current top 10 flyweight as of this moment. A pretty comfortable stylistic match-up for him too, rather than the awkward stylist-type he had hell with before in Rungvisai or the consistent, relentless pressure a Segura would face him with, Sosa's a pretty conventional box-puncher who doesn't really do anything too sensational. He(Sosa) is ridiculously open to straight punches, it's heinous, just about everything accurate(as in not whistling either side or falling short) thrown down the pipe landed bang on the money. I don't know what it is with the Mexican, he's always had this glaring frailty where straight shots just penetrate his defense with ease, particularly from a southpaw, which Pong is, obviously. Sosa's reactions looked weirdly off from my perspective, I said it in the build up that he may have some success because he's quite good at coming over the top with his punches - particularly his left hook from a crouching stance - and maintaining range after doing so, which would be to the detriment of Wonjongkam, who nowadays falls VERY short with his punches consistently. But it wasn't there. Sosa never took advantage at all. Pongsaklek would fall short and Edgar would walk away or fire in a crazily tardy response, by which point Wonjongkam was back in his normal stance, prepared for the assault. That's essentially the long and short of why the Thai won so comfortably. It's that simple. Wonjongkam's very much flawed defensively himself nowadays with his Marquez-like countering style, but Sosa makes him look like Omar Narvaez such is his vulnerability. You can fully expect another long wait before Pong takes on another fight of this magnitude, and a steady stream of no-hopers with shoddy records will form an orderly queue. He's getting on a bit now though, he's young for his age I suppose but time dictates that he still doesn't have long left to cement the kind of legacy he really should.
Carlos Ortiz v Joe Brown Well if you ever want to see one fighter dominating another quality opponent with a jab then this is the fight you want to see. Ortiz jab really was fantastic throughout the fight, didn't look like much power on them but the speed and ease at which they were thrown really took the fight away from Brown. Throughout the first 6 rounds I don't think I remember Ortiz throwing 1 right hand, obviously dissuaded due to the excellent countering ability of the experienced champion. Brown had zero answer for anything tbh, Ortiz had the beating of him at range and easily tied Brown up when on the inside. Classy performance from Ortiz, must watch more of him.
Hearns vs Roldan Great short fight Just finished reading a book about Hearns, watched the Virgil Hill fight the other day & the Roldan fight this morning
Got a list for most exciting fights/greatest performances? Got his second fight with Harry Bell waiting to be watched. Ya seen that one?
Holmes vs Ocasio (Amongst many other fights of Big Larry) How the fudge did Ocasio get up after the second knockdown in the 7th? Nevermind the 3rd and 4th KD's (I reckon he would have got to his feet after the 4th, but it was wise of Padilla to stop the fight). Lot of heart shown by the young man, to pick himself up like that. A reasonably skilled fighter too, he just happened to run into Big Larry a bit too soon.
