REVISED: Under 185lb Tournament, FINALS # 1 Rocky Marciano vs # 2 Jack Dempsey

Louis and Dempsey both stated that Marciano hit harder than they did.

Jack Kearns had a grudge against Dempsey obviously but he was pretty high on Marciano too.

 

Haven't we all seen both of them in most of their major fights on film?

 

I just think they were being nice But even if that was true, that don't mean Rocky would have beaten them.

How would Dempsey know that anyway?

 

Watching his friend Rex Layne get his jaw broken and teeth knocked out from a single right hand by Marciano. Dempsey said he usually had to put them down a couple of times to finish them, while Marciano could end a fight with one punch.

 

"I honestly can't remember once that Rocky came out on top."

I have the special on VHS from HBO back about 1980 in which the Boxing Writers of America voted for the best in each division and the top three heavyweights were Louis, Ali, and Marciano, with Dempsey fourth.

The turn of the century panel of experts by AP rated Ali, Louis, Marciano, Dempsey, Johnson in that order.

I just don't think it is fair to say that Marciano never comes out on top.

 

And Mc ,I respectfully trust the opinions of the vast majority of boxing people who saw them BOTH FIGHT. Common sense DICTATES that.deal

 

Everyone has there own opinion on these things, and I make my own mine up after listening to other experts, looking at films, going by who they fought and beat, etc.

I talked to Harold Lederman about Rex Layne, and he didn't think he was that good. Rex was stopped 6 times before his career was over, Charles, Earl Walls twice, Tommy Jackson twice and Rocky.

It looks like we are in disagreement and I can handle that, But to say that we shouldn't take in what other have to say, when they saw both, is not the way you should do things.

 

Dempsey was a very modest man. Tell me how many 220 pound fighters did Marciano ko ? Well Dempsey flattened many. It is not one punch kos that makes a better puncher, but the speed and accuracy of the blows.
Bob Satterfield hit harder with his right hand than any LH of recent times,does that make him a more effective puncher than Ezzard Charles or Archie Moore.? The answer is self-evident ... Just look at the 1927 long count bout in which an old 32 year old Dempsey ,a shell of himself, dropped Tunney with 6 or so fast,and accurate punches right on the button.Even in slow motion ,the blows seem fast...And look at Dempsey's
rat a tat left-hooks from closeup on Firpo's chin,with virtually no punching room. You'll be enlightened...Marciano would not see the 3rd round IMO.

I think you stance about the "experts" would be convincing if there were no film of either man. That does allow us to judge not only their abilities but the quality of the opposition.

And there is extensive film of both men.

 

There only a couple of a prime Dempsey. We never saw him with Carl Morris, Fred Fulton, Al Palzer, Battling Levinsky, Gunboat Smith, and others before he fought Willard.

 

I agree But if you only saw a couple of fights that a prime Dempsey had, I think it would be better to at least take in what they have to say. There no films of Harry Greb actually fighting, But most people rate him as an Old-Time Great. Some even rate him a top 5 all-time or better. IBRO rated Greb #2 Pound for Pound and the #1 Middleweight of all-times, and none of them ever saw him fight.
