The source website had it down as Bat - but I was thinking the same to be honest - but then I know Bat had a lot of reconstructive surgery as his career went on so don't know - maybe a young Bat?? It looks like him in the eyes and general features to me but yeah my first thought was it doesn't look magled enough for Bat although could this have been before the more brutal bouts he had??

 

Rocky,I seriously doubt that this picture was of a young Bat who had his first bout in 1896 at the age of Fourteen. And in a few years was fighting Young Corbett, Jimmy Britt, Abe Attell. Bat fought til 1917 when he retired at the age of 35 years old. So he couldn't have had primitive [those days] constructive surgery while he was fighting. And he retired at 35,and this photo is of a guy in his 20s or so. Where is Sherlock Holmes Rocky ?

 

Hhmm toughie this one?? Certainly has a strong resemblance for me - a footnote I did read the back story to the Bat-Wolgast 40-rounder both had had cosmetic stuff done prior to that fight - Wolgast I think it was has parafin (!!??) injected into his flattened nose to return it to shape slightly and one day the story goes Wolgast got a zit on his nose and he squeezed and squeezed until finally the spot popped out seeped the parafin and down Wolgasts nose deflated hahaha

Something awe inspiring seeing Willard in ring at Yankee Stadium which was then brand new ... kind of a crossing of eras ... old world Willard out of the sticks of mid-century Kansas fighting in the mecca of 20th century sport ... mazing image ...

Rocky, A GEM ! I have never seen a photo of young Ketchel before.My long deceased Uncle as a boy saw Stanley Ketchel train in Van Cortland Park, Bronx, N.Y. When I asked him as a tyke,about Ketchel,he would only say how "handsome" Ketchel was,and seeing your picture of young Stanley, my Uncle was right. Underneath that handsome visage was a volcano...:good:good
