Hernan Marquez vs. Luis Concepcion II RBR

Anyway, it seems like all the focus has been on Hernan in the aftermath here.

What now becomes of Luis? :think

Had he gotten revenge tonight, we'd have an appetizing rubbermatch in the oven...but where does he go now? Even if he picks up a couple of good wins, there is really no point in a third try against Marquez. Does he move up to 115? (where he looked downright scary against Chango) Does he stick around but target a different org's belt, trying to get ranked with something other than the WBA?

The first war with Marquez obviously didn't ruin him, given how he bounced back against Vargas. (looking good enough for some people to even favor him in the rematch!)

I honestly don't think what happened tonight will ruin him, either. It ruins any chance of securing a third date with Marquez, but it was really too quick a summary beating to have had any lasting effect on him - physical or mental (since he can just assure himself that Marquez caught him cold after the glove-tape interruption, since many fighters seem to shield their psyche with the "caught cold" excuse when licking their wounded pride).

 

Nobody cares about Concepcion now? He's yesterday's garbage?

Gives us a FOTY candidate and a KOOTY candidate in the same year, but then finds himself on the wrong end of another KOOTY candidate and suddenly he's persona non grata? :bart

 

Not to mention Raul Martinez, who probably has a chance at a world title coming up in a rubbermatch with Rodrigo Guerrero.

Watch Narvaez drop back down and make a dozen more defenses, too. :yep

Of all the Donaire victims, though - Marquez has the most promise & longest shelf life. Darch is close to done, and so are Sid and Montiel. The rest just aren't as good as Marquez.

 

IMO Concepcion's best bet would be to look at the wider-open super fly division, and target Shimizu (the weakest champion right now, and he'd get to preserve his high status with the WBA rather than starting from scratch with a new organization)

 

Don't judge Martinez too harshly. Guerrero is better than his record. He's got an iron jaw & iron will...ask Vic. Plus, you can never read too much into a technical decision. Martinez still could have conceivably come on strong in the later rounds and won had it not been for the cut.

Montiel might have a decent win or two left in him, but I really worry for his health and well-being after that brain-scrambling KO. Plus, he's no spring chicken. He's been in the game a long time already and been in some wars.

Narvaez as you said is also pretty old (but a lot less shopworn, thanks to his defensive style). He'll probably just feast on soft touches at home until retiring...and I like the guy, just being honest.

Wladimir Sidorenko already peaked IMO, about 4-5 years ago. He looked like a shadow of himself against Nonito.

Regardless of whether he beats Moreno and secures another title, Vic's time at the top of the sport is drawing to a close. His awkward slugging style doesn't lend itself to longevity and he's already super old for the lower weights.

Chango Vargas and Maldonado are shot to ****.

Mthalane is just OK.

Rafael Concepcion hasn't picked up a good win since Banal more than three years ago (and has gone 5-4 since, losing to three big names but also a virtual unknown).

Of all the Donaire victims, none have a brighter outlook than Hernan Tyson Marquez. :deal A beast in his prime.
