Sam Mcvey stated he did not want another fight with Johnson, after being thrashed umercifully for 20 rounds and , then being kod for several minutes ,so badly kod, that the end of the fight had to be explained to him later.
I am only taking the trouble to tell you this because I don't particularly want to see you make a **** of yourself again.

As its school half term , you might use some of your free time swatting up on the old fighters, because it is patently clear you haven't any idea what you are talking about .
N .B. Don't say that about Santa Claus.

McVey, has anyone verified just how many fights McVey had when he was challenging Johnson ? I'm assuming you must know since you are so versed on the result. Boxrec has him fighting JOhnson in his 7th, 9th and 11th fights ... I'm fairly sure you factor that into your appraisal of physically prime Johnson's victories, don't you ?

I've said it before and i'll say it again.

Draw up a top ten list of heavyweights between 02 and 10 (johnson's prime era) and you'll see he defeated them all.

Cael seems like a young child, I wonder if he's one of my pupil's :think

If we all think that, then the obvious conclusion would be that you might be missing something.

I don't know the answer to your question ,it has been hypothesized that McVey had quite a few more fights but I could not say.

See ,I have answered your question courteously, and ignored the implicit sarcasm that was behind it.

The fight was in 1904 and both were pre -prime, McVey significantly more than Johnson imo.

McVey and Johnson became very close friends, living and ,travelling together at times.

Whether this had anything to do with Mcvey not wanting to share a ring with Johnson again or ,whether it was a case of three defeats is enough ,again I do not know.

What I do know is that McVey had allready kod Denver Ed Martin,Kid Carter ,and Fred Russell ,in the 2 years previous to being kod by Johnson.
Russell was coming off a ko over Griffin when he went in with McVey.
Carter ,you will recall[ because you mentioned it in a post trying to denigrate Johnson] kod Choynski in 1 rd ,drew with Hart and kod Maher ,prior to being stopped by McVey.

McVey was thought welll enough of to be considered a challenger to Jeffries in 1904 ,this has been well documented.

"In the rematch in Los Angeles in October 1903, even though McVey had lost the first bout, he was actually the betting favorite. The San Francisco Bulletin reported: "It may have been that the wiseacres agreed that McVey was improving with every battle, and therefore due to cop Johnson."

The know-it-alls got it wrong. Johnson won a 20-round points victory, but it seems to have been one of those one-sided but exciting bouts. The Bulletin reported that it was "a smashing fight," although Johnson clearly had the better of it. Down three times, "McVey came up after every knockdown full of fight and forced matters at all times." The crowd of 7,000 was "thoroughly satisfied," the Bulletin reported.

There was a third meeting six months later in San Francisco, for the "colored heavyweight championship." The San Francisco Bulletin described the boxers as "the biggest and best in their class and color in the world."

Jeffries was due to make a title defense against an overmatched white challenger, Jack Munroe. The Bulletin suggested, in a somewhat convoluted manner, that the Johnson-McVey winner should be next in line for Jeffries, arguing: "There does not appear to be a ring man in all the wide area where pugilism holds sway with sufficient inches and heft to meet the world's champion after Munroe than one of tonight's fighters."

It does seem that a lot of the white boxing aficionados of the time wanted to see Jeffries meet the stern test that would be provided by a challenger of color. They just wanted to see the best fight.

Johnson was described as "the cleverest big man now before the public," but McVey came in for praise, too, being described as "the ideal fighter … strong and fast, and never once from the tap of the gong does he let up a moment in his consistent rushing and desire to get to close quarters."

In the event, Johnson scored his most decisive win of the three-fight series, knocking out McVey in the 20th and final round. "McVey stood a horrible walloping, and it was only his great strength and endurance that kept him from meeting his fate earlier in the fight," the Bulletin reported.!

This was written by Graham Houston, for Boxing Monthly, I believe

    Some window dressing.

:think aren't you the one who said that JJ was top 5 h2h and that he will beat a prime Tyson?
What kind of "mature" guy with so called boxing knowledge could make such a ridiculous claim without joking?
It may be you the young child who doesn't know wtf is talking about but pretends to be someone who's opinion is always important and right on the money.
No wonder you guys don't adventure too much in the general forum, with such ridiculous claims you would be all laughed at, the same way im doing right now

by the looks of it it seems that a good proportion of the classic forum shares the opinion that Louis was a boxing master and a monstrous power puncher.
He very well was, but he was in his time...
the huge conflict btw us appears when classic posters come up with stpid claims such as "Louis would KTFO
Lennox,he will dominate today like he did in his time; Dempsey would kill the Klits; Klits are no better then Carnera and Willard"...this shows me that most of you don't have any idea wtf you're talking about.
I think it was you who said that ****ing Firpo would floor young Foreman if they ever fought:lol:
and i belive it was McGrain(i may be wrong) with who i had an argument in the general forum, where he claimed that Jack Sharkey was technically as good as Holyfield...needless to say he made a complete ass of himself, good thing for you, you made that statement here where the nostalgic senile old hags like Mcvey are the majority.

It appears that the old hag forgot to take his pills again.
Johnson beat a green 18 yr old Mcvey, practically a less version of the already unimpressive Mcvey who fought Jim Johnson.
He also fought and beat young and underweight Langford, and an inexperienced Jeannette....once they all matured and developed into complete fighters, Jack Johnson blatantly ducked all of them and the best white heavy at the time, in order to defend the title against the likes of johnson, flynn, obrien, kaufman

I suppose the old hag Mcvey would try to tell me that they were all afraid to fight the big headed Johnson for the title like he always does

There was no sarcasm in my question. You should stop being so insecure and then contradict yourself with the smile icon ..
why is it that you cannot give an answer about Jonson without knocking Jeffries ?

As far as your answer, you are quite the surgeon, selectively leaving out key information that diminishes your argument, a pattern you have that diminishes your integrity with regards to answering questions ...trying to place Johnson and McVey as pre-prime when they met is just slightly bending the facts ... one was a seasoned professional while the other was a novice. You know this so why not say it?

Nothing insecure about me, I tend to err on the side of complacency, being filthy rich, marvellously attractive ,and popular with everyone, [this site accepted], will do that to you:lol:
I know exactly what your motive was my callow young friend ,and I pre-empted it.:nono

I'll give you a comparison, when Langford fought Johnson he had over 50 fights under his belt ,[about twice Johnson's score], do you think he was in his prime?
McVey had ko wins over three class men when he fought Johnson.
Just prior to the last Johnson /McVey match the eventual winner was being spoken of as the logical challenger to Jeffries,I provided a link that confirms this.
Both got paid for the fight ,so I guess that means they were both professionals?:huh
Jonson? Would this be Ben Jonson the playwright?
Not only have you adopted Mendozy's line of argument ,you appear to have copied his spelling. H E, you need to raise your game .

You've made certain claims about technical evolution in boxing since 1945, but when I've presented you with film and ask you to point out the differences, you've ignored me and posted your own footage, of bad 1940's fighters and a Dempsey era fighter(!).

Freddie Roach described Joe Louis as "the best textbook fighter of all time...if you want to learn how to box, that's the guy you watch."

Not one of your moder demi-gods, not even one of the many great modern day fighters he worked with, but Louis. Louis wasn't a great technical boxer for his own time, he was a great technical boxer for all time. When you disagree, it's not some disagreement between the "old hags" on the Classic forum but with the entire boxing fraternity. That's what you seem to continual miss, you talk like you are coming from a place where you represent most of boxing and we're stuck in a time warp...the opposite is true.

I don't expect to get anything out of you here - maybe you'll be to busy taking it up with Freddie Roach - but again, what are the technical advancements apparent in the below films, one showing 1940's technicians, one showing 2000's technicians.

he wasn't 20 years old when he got Ko'ed you flaccid old ****.., it's time for you to take your pills again.
How could you dominate someone when you go on tangents, and wile at it, you can't even get your facts right?
