In my 33 yrs of watching boxing these three champions are among my all time favorites. I would like to ask the classic posters in what order do you rank these 3 as the best all around fighters. Im not talking resumes but all around fighting skills. I used to have Barrera as no.1 but im now leaning towards.
    Marquez
    Barrera
    Morales

I've always felt MAB was the most complete and versatile of the trio. Virtually nothing between them though.

I agree. Barrera is the most versatile, Marquez the most aesthetically pleasing, Morales the hardest. All on the exact same level, really.

I might be alone in thinking Marquez is slightly behind those two. shame morales and marquez never fought.

Do you think there is an argument to say MAB had the best chin of all three Mexicans, El? He was only ever really stopped on his feet. He would have almost certainly have seen out the round had his corner not intervened in the first Jones fight. MAB has fought Pacquiao, Morales, Marquez, and Khan, and was rarely wobbled and never counted out. Morales was visibly wobbled on multiple occasions. Against MAB in round 12 of their first fight, Jesus Chavez hurt him early on, and Pacquiao had him out. Marquez has hit the canvas too many times to mention.

Despite being stopped in '97, I think MAB might have had the best chin of all three.

I'd say they were both rocked about as often as the other. What it comes down to for me is that Morales had the most porous defense of the group, often resulting in him taking the harder, flusher shots, i.e. the kind of shots that so often result in the recipient being put on ***** street. Yet these were the types of shots he'd just walk through most of the time. They've all taken them, but Morales took more and responded better for my money.

I disagree with the first point. MAB was hurt against Marquez, granted, but he wasn't really wobbled. By "wobbled" I mean when a fighter is hit and is momentarily removed from his senses. ***** street, almost. MAB was literally never at this point outside of the Jones fight from what I can remember.

6.25. I don't recall MAB ever reacting like this after being hit.

    I'm nitpicking.

He was momentarily stunned from a big, flush 2 punch combination, but recovered immediately. Wasn't even on wobbly legs. If anything, that clip proves my point. I'd wager Barrera would've put the earmuffs on at that stage, whereas Morales just shook it off and went right back to business.

I don't think we would have seen MAB's legs react in that manner. He would have put the earmuffs on without his legs dipping, or without him falling back on the ropes. It's similiar to how Erik reacted to the double left hook he was hit with in the final round of his first fight with Barrera. He stumbled back, and he clearly wasn't in full control of his legs. As I say, I've never seen MAB react like that to a shot which makes me believe he had the better chin of the two.

I'm a MAB lover. Ignore me.

Has there ever been another triplet of fighters at the same weight, same era and of the same heriatage who fans have such difficulty in ranking?

    My three goes :

MAB - I just feel he was the most complete, he was a Mexican slugger to begin with, and then he became a masterful boxer puncher, the timing of his offensive punches was something special.

JMM - Avoided and for good reason, Marquez for me has the better offensive skill set of the three, he may be the most fundamentally brilliant fighter that I have ever seen, certain things that he does, are done by him alone, feints in particular, where he throws his punch 90% of the way, withdraws just before impact and explodes into another punching sequence.

EM - The best to watch of the three, I just feel that Morales had less dimensions to his game than his two countyman, and struggled because of it. Of the three though, he's the one that I would choose to watch if given the choice.

:yep Nah, you make a good point about Morales being more susceptible to flush shots. His defense was certainly the worst of the two.

Marquez has shown more versatility than all because he's fought many more styles and had success against them. Marquez has fought slicksters, defensive types, movers than Morales/MAB never had to face.

An argument can be made for all 3 but I'll go with Marquez, he's a 3 weight champion that no man has ever really shown clear superiority of in any of those 3 classes. His longevity is also amazing, avoided for years (by Morales and MAB incidently) before finally getting his chance and shining ever since, his wins over avoided contenders are also underrated. Maybe come Pacquaio 3 he'll distinguish himself as no1, maybe not

Morales chin is the best but he's a bit bigger than MAB

    I'll say....

    1. Morales
    2. Barrera
    3. Marquez

The difference between Morales and Barrera is almost negligible. I actually had MAB winning all 3 fights on my card, but I am still inclined to give "El Terrible" the slightest of edges.

Marquez, to me, is a tiny notch below those two. But the distance between #2 and 3 is a bit greater than the distance between one and two, which is razor thin in my book.

I cant see Morales as No.1 as far as skill goes. I could see a toss up between Morales and Marquez though.
