lulz If you put 'bigger' instead of 'better', I would agree. Penn at lightweight was better than Diaz will ever be at welterweight. We'll see how Diaz does when he's 33 and especially if he can't make 170 and has to fight at middleweight.
unfortunately this fight took place in the real world where diaz is a welterweight. and right now a BETTER welterweight than penn is.

Diaz 2011 is relentless, and he fights everybody at a much higher pace than prime Penn was ever comfortable with. Diaz 2011 has an iron chin that prime Penn is not heavyhanded enough to overwhelm. Diaz 2011 is a well-rounded fighter (far more well-rounded than most of prime BJ's opponents) with terrific heart who fears nobody in the cage. And so on. BJ is an unquestioned ATG and still very capable of competing at the top level of MMA, but no version of BJ Penn rolls over 2011 Nick Diaz. :hat
My only objection was that, the way RN phrased his first post, it sounded like Diaz was always a better fighter than Penn. That isn't the case. Diaz' advantages aren't technical, they're because of size and age. Good bigger man will always give a great smaller man trouble. I concur. We didn't discover the wheel here.
Hype means that the guy in question isn't as good as he's been described. Noone claimed Diaz is an ATG. They describe him as a really good and tough-as-nails fighter, and they're right.
No, that's a hype job. Hype is getting behind a fighter and bigging him up on the basis of a good run or 1-2 good wins. Diaz is not in GSPs league yet in MMA forums across the web guys are going crazy picking him to ko ATG GSP, that my friend is hype.
Size played more of a role in the outcome of this fight than age did. Penn is a warrior giving up so much size/reach and standing and trading with Diaz. BJ is one tough mother****er.
I think that 11 straight wins (and this is MMA, not boxing), with 9 of them by KO or submission, plus a decisive win over an ATG, are good enough reasons to big up a fighter. If anyone picked Diaz to beat Penn before their fight, you would be calling that 'hype' too. Nothing wrong with picking a reasonable upset before a fight. Noone even fathomed that Serra would KO GSP before their fight. GSP will probably take Diaz down at will and get a fairly easy decision, but lets just wait and see.
are you ready for this carles.. i know your tiny mind might really struggle with this concept but here goes...penn IS in his prime...or very close to it.. you know what he isnt though?... a ****ing welterweight! never has been. ive said this before. bj is sublime at lightweight, he could drop back there right now and be top 3 in the world no problems. but at welter hes just another contender and this nick diaz we see today belts ANY welterweight version of penn you have seen. five years ago it might have been a different story but thats because nick has improved out of sight since then not because bj is "over the hill"
