I had the Johnson-Charles fight even on my scorecards....Charles actually knocked Johnson down with a right hand in the 10th
CHARLES HAD A BRILLIANT KO OVER 6'3 Coley Wallace see below and then he went on to KO Bob Satterfield in 2 in explosive manor. 2 fights later Bob Satterfeild KO'd 31-1 Cleveland"Big Cat"Williams in 3 rds. putting Big Cat down 2 times Charles was rejuvenated after the Wallace and Satterfeild KO's and was still a dangerous and skilled fighter. These 2 films would tell you that. http://youtu.be/AjFq5aOYYJM
Bob Satterfield was an all out brawler and mixer because he thought he could KO everyone but he did not have a bad chin http://youtu.be/hud8V6UVGbM He mixed well with many exchanges vs Elkin Brothers http://youtu.be/za2qFeWxjek even against one of the best punchers of the 50's Clarence Henry anyone can say Satterfeild had a glass jaw....I would love to have a fighter like him around today he was a do or die Kamikaze warrior http://youtu.be/Z6sE9GSJT6c
It was a hard fight to score, I thought Ezzard landed the heavier blows but Johnson moved a lot and jabbed well...a draw would have been fair, I thought Ezz won due to the harder blows but it could have gone either way...Johnson would not give Ezz a rematch but lets look at some of the heavyweights Johnson beat before and after the Charles fight and around that time Eddie Machen Doug Jones Billy Gilliam Clarence Henry Nino Valdez Bob Satterfield Bert Whitehurst Wayne Beathea Marty Marshall Sonny Ray Julio Menderos
:huh When he got knocked out 13 times, it's difficult to say he didn't. Critical article of Charles: http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...g=970,7442847&dq=harold+johnson+charles&hl=en Apparently not everyone was so impressed by his recent form.
the fight in salt lake city with mid westerner jack dempsey as the ref was a hometown win for layne, charles won their serries and knocked rex down many times. layne did best walcott BEFORE walcott won the title so he was not that bad. Layne was more of a title threat than beshore, barone, valentino and leshnavich.
I would say that would work both ways and there fight was close but Ezz stalked a rematch with Johnson and Valdez but Archie Moore eliminated both with multiple victories over both
I don't see how you can come to that conclusion. I think it's clear Charles landed a big right hand flush at 5:10, and harold had a delayed reaction to it, it turned his legs to jelly at 5:12 and he went down.
I don't think he was too affected by the punch. He just got thrown off balance by trying to follow up with a counter and was up immediately. Either way it doesn't factor in the scoring.
I saw it as a flash knockdown. Watching these two rounds, I thought Charles was jabbing more effectively. The last time I watched the entire fight, I scored it 5-4-1 for Charles.
