Steve Bunce: Throwback fight can see Burns shock Katsidis

I know that this is very naiive of me, but I am surprised how many Scots seem confident of a Burns victory. I understand people in Burns' camp being confident, they are close to him and will believe that they have seen things in him that have not yet shown in the ring that will give him the edge, many camps seem to. But for we fans who base most of our viewpoint on having watched the fights, it doesn't take too long scanning their respective records and fights to make Katsidis the heavy favourite. I'm not knocking Burns - I have liked him well enough when he has given interviews - but I would have expected most UK support to be more of the 'support the plucky underdog in his effort to pull off an upset' variety, rather than genuine confidence that Burns will just have too much for Katsidis. Or am I just falling for the bravado?

Anyway, personally I want Burns to win, I am looking forward to the fight and I think he has a chance - but unless Katsidis has aged in camp since his last fight I don't see how Burns pulls it off. Top level sport is often about levels, and taking on an established world-level fighter in one's first fight in a higher weight class, without having had a similarly top level of opposition at the division just left is rarely going to work out well.

 

I don’t let my nationality come into it. Unlike a lot of Scots, I couldn’t give a **** about the English ruling our tiny little country over 500 years ago or something. It certainly has no place in the sport, that’s for sure.

To be fair to all the Scots backing Ricky fair play to ya, I want Ricky to win cos he's a Brit but I know that he has an uphill battle, well not uphill it's ****ing vertical
