Are 'British stoppages' really a bad thing?

I was the same as you but told by a friend who was ringside sat close to his corner that the ref went up and told them that he would be looking at stopping it if he doesnt do more

Is the refs or isn't something thats coming from the BBBofC?

I mean IJL let Shannon Briggs get beat to within an inch of his life against Vitali, would he do the same in a British ring?

Mostly they are embarrassing. It seems that so many fights over here are stopped way too early and it ruins a lot of fights. If Gatti/Ward happened over here then I dont think we see 5 rounds.

How did you want Calzaghe to fight that fight against Hopkins? Let Hops have his breathers, set himself for his pot shots?

Is this a discussion? They're almost as embarrassing as the **** decisions we regularly come up with.

It's about timing and common sense, Referee's IMO are being overworked on shows being asked to ref 3-4 fights at times there under the lights for 45mins at a time plus judging on side.

I think sometimes they wanna get through the night as easy as possible, I personally would like to see more thought and better timing put into stoppages not 'might as well jump in now and get this fight done with'.

I agree with this to a certain extent, but I re-watched the Calzaghe - Lacy fight the other day. Calzaghe won every round of the fight and Lacy needed a KO to win as they entered the final rounds and JC continued to pepper Lacy at will. Now, Lacy was clearly out-classed and had no answer to Joe's attacks and the outcome was beyond doubt but Lacy could quite easily have landed that one sweet punch and Joe could have been counted out. To give another example, Carl Thompson against Sebastian Rothmann, 'the cat' was out on his feet and had taken a tremendous amount of punishment before producing the decisive blow against all the odds. Thompson similarly was knocked from pillar to post by David Haye before stopping him.

None of us want another Michael Watson, but we all love the last second-come-from-behind-against-all-odds-Rocky-style-KO...

When it's "prospect vs. Roadsweeper" as someone mentioned I don't personally mind so much if it's stopped after a few rounds.

When it's a proper fight, then the way I look at it, is that it shouldn't be the responsibility of the ref to prevent a 12 round beating. They should of course stop the fight if someone is so out of it that they can't defend themselves, but they don't need to stop a one-sided beating. Rather, it should be made clear that it's the responsibility of the corner to stop the fight in that situation if they believe that their fighter is taking too much punishment with little chance of winning it.
