Not sure what to make of your post.

I said Dempsey would look like an amateur next to Ali. So you're saying Dempsey beat Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Liston? I think you may be mixing up Dempsey and Ali here but who knows :huh

I think both the pro- and anti-Dempsey guys are missing the point of this thread.

I picked Dempsey basically at random; I could just have easily said Sharkey, Charles, or even Liston, for that matter. A lot of people put Ali and Louis at #1 and #2 (whichever order) for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people use those #1 and #2 rankings in fantasy matchups like bulletproof vests. Every heavyweight tournament I remember on Classic ended up with an Ali-Louis final. People pay superficial attention to "styles" in fantasy tournaments, but the same guys keep winning the tournaments even though in real life they didn't win every fight.

Whenever we match two heavyweight champs against one another, we're matching two fighters who at one time were each the best fighters on the planet. I don't care if it's Ali versus Louis or Ali versus Johansson -- we should expect styles to make a huge difference, and for the fighter with the stylistic advantage to have a very good shot at winning. Even against a guy with a "top 2" resume.

And WHAT is my own kind,my friend ?

I apologise that my opinion does n't tally with yours, but this is called exercising our democratic right to debate. If Ali was taking testosterone,as you allege, you presumably read it somewhere. Please quote your source (and I ain't talking ketchup...!) Personally,I,and many others on here no doubt, consider it absolute bull****,but have your say. FROM WHOM OR WHERE DID YOU GET THIS FROM...?

I don't have any racist slurs, hatred, or bigotry toward Dempsey. I rate the guy quite well h2h(especially when you turkey's think Sam Langford or Bob Fitzsimmons would have beaten him)...I just think Dempsey was a terrible waste of talent who could have been one of the greatest fighters of all time, and instead blew it. Had he fought and beat Harry Wills and Harry Greb, I would rate Dempsey top 3 of all time, maybe higher. I simply cannot defend a guy who didn't take on the 2 best contenders of his era(who happened to be ATG hall of famers). How could you call a guy the "king" of his era if he is unproven like that?

I love Dempsey's style, his talent(he is probably the best pre 1930s looking fighter on film) I read his books, I treasure his toughness and overcoming adversity as a hobo. I just don't like his resume. Not one bit.

In general the rock paper scissors of boxing styles is that Boxers beat Sluggers, Sluggers beat Swarmers and Swarmers beat Boxers.

    Dempsey - Swarmer
    Ali - Boxer

If all other things are equal - as the poster suggested, well,

    You do the math

like your hero was and is , and not because of his boxing career . i don't mean d parkinson .
me describing your attributes has nothing 2do with democracy .
Search engines r intended only 2 yield d maximal amount of results regardless of relevance . I m certain that d "right" ppl here can find this "proof" 4u but they don't want 2 . They don't want 2 emphasize d fact that in addition 2 all , Ali was a juicer as well .

    :yep

I'm just imagining this standard of proof used in a court of law.

"Yes, Your Honor. We allege that Ali took testosterone and steroids. What's that, Your Honor? 'Evidence'? No, Your Honor, we don't have any documentation, but we don't need it. Certain unnamed people know that it's true. They just don't want to tell you, so you'll never hear it. But you should take our word for it...that you can take their word for it...whoever they are."

That's OK. Mistakes happen from time to time. We "wrong people" are often confused for the "right people". Probably something to do with the "people" part.

I don't care much either way. You may well be right. I just found the standard of proof that you'd described hilarious.

As far as my own ignorance goes, I know Ali took diuretics and some other stuff before the Holmes match. I don't know how far back the supposed steroid use goes, but I'd guess it didn't cover his first or most of his second careers.
