Prior to the Ali-Frazier II fight in 1974 Don Dunphy ranked the heavyweights he had seen as follows: Louis, Marciano, Ali, Frazier. He was a fixture on the weekly boxing shows broadcast on TV in the 50s and 60s and saw all the greats in all divisions over a long period.

    At HW? :patsch

You do know there's a difference between us and them. You know, Tyson would likely obliterate Wlad K. Frazier probably would, too. And no, Floyd isn't the GOAT.

No, in any measurable sport. Compare those 100m records or weight lifting records from the 60s to now, and let me know which 60s athletes can compete today.

Why would Muhammed Ali be the exception to the rule?

Actually I believe this is the case, and even believe their are explainable reasons why boxing is different to these sports. But, if it is the case with the 60s, Then it is not just blind nostalgia that makes an unbeaten competitive fighter from the 50s arguably the GOAT. And same goes with Joe Louis, who was fightin in the 1930s.

:thumbsup you can´t have it both ways.

Anyway, I think both Marciano and Louis would have beaten the Manilla-Ali. Prime for prime I´d pick Rocky to beat Ali and Ali to beat Louis.

If ali paced himself better in FOTC he may have fared better. better throwing your best shots and bringing it on when a fighter is slowing down. too much ego was involved in this fight and he played right into frazier's hands. the bonavena fight proved he wasn't yet the real deal of earlier times. he paced himself better for the rematch and came on strong at the end. manila he started out at a crazy speed again thinking he could take frazier out and only just got through which was why ali calls it his best performance of his career. i still pick the ali of williams/terrell period to beat anyone.

It's understandable, MB. In spite of feeling open-minded 'n impartial, there's that part of us that clings to our youth.

Think i judge guys based on what they bring in the ring, 'n give'em their props. But the mention of guys I grew up with is an adrenaline rush to Friday nights at the ol' Garden.

I have Louis in at # 4 on my top-10 ATG list...... I'm not sure Louis could beat "Ali, Holmes or Johnson."

I agree Johnny Boy..... 'Tis why I favor and rank Holmes so highly..... He was champ throughout my Jr. High and High school years..... He was the best of that era 1978 - 1985....... Yes, I know Holmes' personality was bland, but his skills were razor sharp......

I think Ali looked better doing what he did best and Marciano looked better at what he did best...you could get in the ring with Ali and he would beat-down and get in the ring with Marciano and he would give you a break-down....Ali had a lot of flash....Marciano brought the cash....the result was you lose

    Folks,

I have the '69 computer fight of "Ali-Marciano" on DVD and I generally can only sit through the alternate ending in which Ali stops Marciano on cuts in round 13, as referee Chris Dundee waives it over for Rocco.........That scenario is digestable to me....

As for Eugene Tunney whipping Ali by decision over 10, 12 or 15 rds is laughable...... Tunney was great for a guy 190 pounds in the 1920s, but Ali would *****-slap Tunney as he did "Patty & Ellis."
