Now the commentators are asking "Is Vicente's power as good as we thought it was?"

:-( Do they not realize that Gonzalez is taking the edge off a lot of his shots by leaning into them and getting his gloves in the way to absorb much of their impact?

 

Round 6

Jabs by Gonzalez, pushing in to press chest to chest against Vicente and then backing slowly all the way outside behind his repetitive left jab. Straight right lead by Vicente, sniping from long range as Gonzalez drifts to the ropes. Now another right by Vicente, this one a slow and sloppy overhand. Gonzalez is circling to his left and jabbing up from his hip with his arms down. BIG 1-2 by Gonzalez using Vicente's momentum against him as the big puncher started taking a step toward him, and then Gonzalez disappears off to the side before Vicente can tag him back. Gonzalez lures Vicente to the ropes and blocks a straight high power flurry, then slips out the side door again. Vicente keeps coming, pumping his fists but getting blocked or dodged. Tie up. Gonzalez stays leaned against Vicente with his upper body but takes short half-steps backward to pull the rug out from under Vicente and make him either stumble forward or risk losing his footing.

10-9 Gonzalez, found his boxing rhythm and settled into that countering role nicely.

Round 7

HARD shots pouring down by Vicente again, coming forward in a sideways stalker's stance so that his rear power hand (the right) has further to travel to pick up more velocity and leave a bigger bruise. Really heavily loaded rights by Vicente marching in. Gonzalez is pot shotting from outside, jabs and lead rights from a low-arms stance as he circles wide to his left. Now Gonzalez flops in and wraps his arms around Vicente's shoulders, squeezing them so Vicente can't lift his arms and bash him off. Gonzalez is mouth-breathing but circling quickly, pot shotting with jabs and lead rights in equal measure. Vicente is flipping up his own jab coming forward now. BIG overhand right by Vicente catches Gonzalez circling by a corner.

It's unusual to those of us on the other five continents, but in all honesty it isn't a bad idea.

Fewer draws, in theory.

It's only title bouts they do it for (9 for minor belts and 11 for major, whereas elsewhere it's 10 and 12 respectively). They don't have three and five rounders.

 

Round 8

Vicente comes forward and slams with right hands. Gonzalez blocks and backs up, and pops a quick five-shot flurry into the oncoming Vicente's face . BIG RIGHT HAND BY GONZALEZ, lined up perfectly. Gonzalez stays pressed against Vicente's lower chest, his forearms held up over his own head, and works some good wide hooks to the mass of braids behind Vicente's ear and short straight right hands to his nose. Gonzalez is really ripping away up close and keeping his head buried and away from harm. THEY TRADE HOOKS, VERY HARD ONE BY VICENTE AS THEY STEP APART!!! Hooks to the body and head by Gonzalez!!! Uppercut by Vicente!! Gonzalez keeps coming forward and whacks up top with a double hook. Vicente loads up a big overhand right and misses. SLAPPING hooks to the face by GONZALEZ. Hooks and uppercuts by Vicente, slinging away as hard as he can but missing loads! Still landing many! Gonzalez has CHEEN! AND HEART! Gonzalez lands MORE FLUSH HOOKS!! Vicente now tries to lean in. Gonzalez guides him back with his forearms in his stomach. Big right by Vicente!!
