imo ali had the best chin. when his speed and dancing around the ring was gone he still won a lot of fights where his iron chin was a big part in winning
Marciano fought coming forward, and took a lot more punches than Ali or Holmes, who were defensive fighters. That notwithstanding, Marciano was only floored twice for flash knockdowns (by two reigning world champions), whereas Ali and Holmes were floored several times and sometimes badly stunned, on the verge of being stopped. Marciano had the best chin of the HW champs.
You mean Shavers, Frazier and Foreman? Shavers and Frazier both knocked Ali down. Foreman never hit Ali flush. Since we're talking about chins here, I think that proves my point. Marciano took more punches from his opponents, and was only floored twice for 2 seconds each time. And are you sure that Shavers, Frazier and Foreman hit harder than Joe Louis, Joe Walcott, and Archie Moore (131 KOs in 185 wins)?
Based on Film/Number of Punchers faced/Resume/Testimonies 1. Muhammad Ali 2. Mike Tyson 3. Evander Holyfield 4. Sonny Liston 5. George Foreman 6. Max Baer 7. Rocky Marciano 8. James J Jeffries 9. Joe Frazier 10. Jack Dempsey HM: James J Braddock
Yes, they did. Especially when you consider Louis was far past his prime. Shavers, Frazier, Foreman had a solid amount of size and punching power over Moore and Walcott and were much younger/more explosive than the 1951 Joe Louis. It's no comparison really.
Max Baer. I don't think that even Ali could have taken the dozens of blows that the young Joe Louis landed on Max Baer's chin and remained conscious. It was not the concussive force of one Joe Louis blow, it was the amazing speed and combinations that no one chin could resist for long... P.S. Big Jess Willard had an iron chin that took Jack Johnson's punches for TWENTY FIVE rounds, without even wilting. Big Jess was first dropped by Jack Dempsey's left-hook in Toledo...Only time ever...
Maxie did have an underrated chin burt...I think his less than screwed on tightly head was rebelling against the knockout drops Louis was shipping to him. That was, in my humble opinion, Louis's best performance..he was magic. max had no clue of how to fight him, once the big right of his was rendered useless.
