I've been watching Fernando's fights lately. Man, he was good. He gave Oscar hell, and more hell than Mosley did. If it wasn't for his chin he would've been an ATG. He did well against Mosley in their first fight and actually was beating him a few rounds which is surprising considering Mosley's speed. We all say Tito ruined him but he still had some great fights after that. What a fun guy to watch.
I think he also beat Quartey. He was a savage around those time its too bad he was just a tiny notch below Oscar and Tito.
That whole batch of welterweights and Jr middleweights was as solid as can be. I highly doubt any top 5 fighter in those current divisions survives then.
I honestly dont think Trinidad ruined Vargas at all. After the trinidad fight, beside the lucky knockdown by rivera, vargas was winning that fight easy before the stoppage and his next fight he easily beat his sparring partner. And if he was ruined, he wouldnt made it a close exciting fight vs oscar. Hell even after the de la hoya fight, vargas came back well and easily won that fight by tko. But imo what ruined vargas career is a career threating back injury in which after that he never was the same. I think ppl here are going by the trinidad fight and dont think in their heads of what really ruined vargas.
I don't think he ruined Vargas either but I think Vargas got thrown to the wolves too fast, like Ortiz has. Vargas was a warrior and i rooted for him against Tito and he showed a TON of heart that fight. His carreer was too fast and furious, el feroz!
man, for him to survive round uno in the tito fight and get back into the fight deserves big respects.
Vargas' career was over as soon as he was HIT by that lethal left hook 23 seconds into his fight with Tito, that **** was so loud that I heard it on my seat on the second level at the Mandalay Resort haha!
I think its was actually the de la hoya loss that ripped his soul out of him, he hated Oscar with a passion, got his ass knocked out and caught with roids. Tito softened him up though.
