Where do you want your lead foot/shoulder to align relative to a same-stance opponet? Lets say two orthodox. You always hear about the importance of the foot positioning facing a southpaw, but you dont hear much about facing orthodox opponents. Should it split their feet? Should it be inline with their lead? Or would there be any strategic benefit to being further inside or outside (like if your opponent has a big right hand for instance)?
What are you trying to do? It all comes down to strategy. If he's a big right hand hitter, move to your right. That is also good if you are looking to land your right hand. Generally, moving to your left will bring your into range of both of his hands. You can move right, get outside his left and out of range of his right, and be in prime position to land your punches. What are you trying to do?
But if you had your foot on a direct line with his lead foot, or a tad to the right (to his outside), wouldnt that make it more likely you would reach with the right hand? Im thinking what would be the best position to land the right cross/straight right.
If you step to your right, yes. But if you CIRCLE to your right, you cut the distance. Slide your left foot over- not necessarily outside his left foot, just a couple inches, then pivot on it, to your right. Do you see? Your right hand is now coming with your entire body weight behind it, and 9 of 10 times he'll turn to follow you and turn into it. Then you are also in a great spot, position and weight wise to throw the hook behind it.
Yep. It is fluid and dynamic. You should generally start off with your foot aligned with his center and then cheat toward your weapons or away from his.
