Nice post, nice job @mdionis Large majority of ppl here will open threads that are all about making statements that will start an argue and nh your favorite fighter.
Assets are not skills in boxing terms. If it is, we are not talking about the same things. I agree with what you say, his speed, stamina, volume and unorthodoxy made Calzaghe near to impossible to beat. It was not pretty though in terms of technique. Calzaghe's footwork, punching technique were not those of a skilled boxer.
I find it kind of amusing that you just used this much time on The_President... For the record Boxrec ratings suck anyway.. All boxing fans know this.
Well, it depends. As any Elo-like rating system, boxrec ratings are the objective mathematical result of fights outcomes only and not of personal preferences, emotions, guesstimations or so. The crucial word is "objective": that doesn't mean the ratings being an exact measure of boxing value but it means the ratings are deterministic and reproducible through a given algorithm once known the input data. Thus, this kind of ratings do measure the results obtained by a boxer not his absolute value; the two are not the same for several good reasons (and the mean difference between the two is very likely to fluctuate more for low number of outcomes, as it happens in boxing), so it should be very clear that these ratings are to be taken cum grano salis (that's why I analyzed very rough thresholds). On the other hand, mathematics say that this kind of ratings do constitute the best objective approximation of the current boxing values (if one agrees that boxing value can be expressed by one numerical parameter). The morale of the story is that if we want to stick to an objective way of ranking the fighters who faced Bute and Ward, we should use as rough measure (that is: indicative value) something like boxrec rankings; if you do know another similar objective ranking system, feel free to use it here instead of the one kindly provided "as is" by boxrec (I would still be very surprised if you'd reach significantly different conclusions based on it). I used this system because 1. is mathematically meaningful and 2. I recall The_President mentioned something about someone's lack of objectivity (Spare me the feminine emotionalisms. [...] These are just FACTS, jack. Not based on emotions and sentimentalism like French fans.). Speaking about The_President, it's worth noticing he's arguably at odds with reality also when stating after Glen Johnson fight: At this point, Bute cannot hide any longer and will be forced to face one of the Super-6 participants. As far as we're speaking about the same tournament, Glen Johnson competed in (as a replacement) and made it up to semifinals (that is: final four) where he lost by MD to the eventual finalist Carl Froch (so he was not so bad a replacement after all). Hopefully, we'll see Bute fighting the winner of the event (he wants to), so these useless interpretations about hiding will be turned off.

its exactly what johnson did, he did not pressure bute as expected. so bute had to adjuste and be more of an agresser than a counter.

I'm starting to think Bute is the best out there..period, any weight division. I'm more and more impressed with every outing. I don't care what people think of his opposition, I trust my eyes, not paper.
Prior to the S6, you cats had Kessler as the favorite to win it all! The way you cats hyped Kessler, he was 2x better than anyone on Bute's resume. Now all of a sudden he's average. Fuk this bs rating system. Where it come from, BoxRec? If so, I laugh in your face for trying to use this crappy rating system to make a point. Ward > Froch > Bute That's the way it is. :deal
