I disagree. He wasn´t black. Only African-American fightes are smooth, elegant and slick. Common knowledge.

Not as flashy. More economical in his movement, and a much harder puncher was Benny Leonard. Remember Leonard flattened Rocky Kansas,an earlier edition of Sammy Angott in strength and ability.:good

I think the fact he wasnt as flashy is what makes him more fluent. He was as mobile as necessary and this mean there were no unneeded steps in his movement, which is why i would say he is more fluent.

Maybe not as flashy in the ring but he is possible the most stylish boxer of all time and a solid contender for best boxing hair cut second to Floyd Patterson.:D

There was no-one that was close to Willie as a master boxer smooth, quick, smart...and to think he handled Saddler when they fought by the Marquis of Queens-berry rules and this was all after a major plane crash where Willie was told never to fight again and receive $500K which was a lot of Gelt back then...Willie was past prime for Saddler....And look at his win streaks...Chalky Wright was an excellent fighter and Willie handled him....Never see another Willie Pep

No one was as pure and even those that were close could not do it for as long

A couple who on their their best night might be classed in the Willie Pep category ( Fluid/ Smooth / Elegant )
    Nicoline Loche (the untouchable)
    Jose Legra (The Mini Ali)
Howard Davis Jr (when not under too much Pressure)

I think fighters like Pep know what their opponents are going to do even before their opponent does.

I haven't seen anyone combine smoothness and economy better than McCallum. Can watch him all day. In fact, let's watch him some right now: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4JZ-5dmp3U[/ame]

No, I think Willie Pep has the smoothest movement of any fighter ever caught on film, he is simply amazing.... top 5 p4p great & best ever FW, no doubt.

    How do you know ?

The footage of Benny Leonard is not good enough to say he looks smoother & more fluid than Willie Pep.

We have to take the words of the boxing historians of his time who raved about his great classical boxing abilities. Just as we today have never seen Harry Greb on film, but we accept from every source available, that Greb possessed great handspeed and footspead. And so with Benny Leonard who DOMINATED for seven years ,the best contenders ever in the lightweight division.
