The difference between light and heavy and cruiser too big?

Does anyone agree with me that the step up from light heavy to cruiser is too big a weight difference? 25 pound is nearly 2 stone. I just feel that maybe there should be another weight division at around 185 pounds.

Maybe it is a bit much when you compare some of the lower weight classes.

It probably is but I wouldn't like to see another division created. Lowering the crusier limit wouldnt solve much as then you could argue that the gulf between 190-195lbs and the heavyweights is too large and that another division is needed there.

If anything there's an argument for reducing the number of divisions at the lower end not adding more at the top end of the weights

Those 2 issues arn't really related and certainly arn't mutually exclusive.

I don't agree there, I think the proliferation of weight divisions at the lower end has contributed to the dilution of the relevance of world titles with the number of junior and super divisions. Not as much as the number of organisations giving out trinkets but it has contributed. Also fewer weight divisions near the lower end would increase the significance of multi weight champions.

If you look back at the weight of some heavyweight champs of yester year they would be cruisers in today's weight classes so I don't think we need more divisions near the top of the weight scales

just one mans personal opinion though

Lower the cruiserweight limit and add a super heavyweight division?

Cruiserweight should be abolished as it is. Another division? I would ditch boxing if they made another division.

    For example, 'Super Heayweight' :patsch

To be honest, the gulf between the 215/220lb heavyweights and the 250lb+ is too big so I don't know if an extra five pounds would matter.

Personally though I'd probably rather see less of the lower divisions and a return to the traditional divisions. Think of the depth there would be in all divisions. It would be awesome.

The bigger you get the less the weight makes a difference. Would start getting daft with another division in between.

When Brewster beat Klitschko he was flabby, he could probably of made cruiser comfortably if he wanted. David Haye wasn't to small either, he just wasn't good enough. The last thing we need is another division, I'd like to see some go tbh.

I don't know enough about Oriental boxing to know whether the divisions below flyweight are really needed but, for instance, the small-sounding 6lb gap in between Fly and Bantam has historically been a very hard one for world class boxers to bridge which suggests there is at least some merit in having a light bamtamweight division.

The major problem in boxing for me is not the number of weight divisions its, as you've mentioned, the number of organizations and bogus belts. They are the real scourge on the sport.

That was when the average heavyweight was around 14stone. Thats not the case today.

This is huge issue for all weight classes not just the Cruiserweight division. Reiterating what has already been said above but there really are far to many weight divisions as it is, and in an ideal world we would be looking to get rid of some of the divisions not add to them.

IMO the place to start would be to merge the Minimumweight and Light Flyweight divisions. Both seriously lack depth and there are no European or American Boxers fighting in either those two weight classes, so you can hardly legitimise them as world champions, when two of the biggest Boxing markets have no links to either of those divisions. At the moment some of the title challengers and champions at Light Flyweight and Minimumweight weights are shocking, there is just no depth what to either division but if they merged at least there it would would some much needed depth and therefore push up the quality and competition of the new merged division.

Ideally there would be a maximum of around a dozen division but that will never happen sadly.

If they lack depth then thats one thing (I don't know, don't follow them) but getting rid of them because no European or American fighters are that weight is another matter.

IMHO the criteria should be "are there an unacceptable percentage of fights at that weight being decided primarily on size?", rather than worry about which area of the boxing market the weight is or isn't popular in.

    Just my 2p...
