I agree, the main criteria for judging a divisions credibility is the standard and depth in quality of the fighters.

But what I was getting it is that those divisions lack depth as it is, if Minimumweight and Light Flyweight have no boxers from large portions of the world then they are hardly vindictive of world class Boxing. Whilst some divisions like Super Featherweight and Heavyweight may suck as well they have fighters from all four corners of the globe, so this is a fair representation of world class Boxing at those respective weights.

So what I wonder is why have them about when the standards at the world level can be so low and the numbers in those divisions will continue to dwindle as future generations continue to get bigger and bigger, and the numbers of professional boxers in general continues to fall, so those divisions will only get worse and worse.

In generations gone by Boxing could make up for having so many weight classes because there were so many pro's, and this created great competition which allowed for the creation of further weight classes, which were able to sustain a good standard. Nowadays the numbers are dwindling and you only have to look at the domestic and world scenes, where some weight divisions are seriously lacking in legitimate contenders and there are far too many weight classes to sustain a decent healthy competitive standard. For me it would make sense to start from the bottom, get 105 and 108 merged and see what impact is has on the division, and from there look to move up some divisions by a couple of pounds here and there, which will invariably cut out one or two further divisions.

Get rid of the cruiserweight division altogether, job done.

Cruiserweight used to be 190lbs, it was only fairly recently raised to 200lbs, hence the large gap from light heavy.

Maybe the best solution would be for light heavy to be raised to bridge the gap? Perhaps supermiddle at 170, Light heavy at 185, Cruiser at 200?

just leave it as it is.

cruiserweight is not exactly overflowing with talent, and is probably considered as one of the least prestigious weight divisions.

adding something else in there will just make it even more pointless.

are there any examples of boxers who are too big for LHW but too small for CW or are we trying to find a solution to a non-existent problem here?
