Our latest in the very fatigued vein of surly blacksmiths versus sophisticated boxers. What prey tell will Janitor say?
If Tubby come in-shape at 230 pounds and is motivated, he prolly out-boxes Jeff over 15 rds with 10 oz. gloves in a 20 X 20 ring...... MR.BILL
It doesn't happen. Jeffries makes a rare appearance ,and grunts to reporters. "I'm not into fighting skunks yet ,when there are no more little white challengers to fight I shall retire .I will not take a chance on losing my title to a black man, especially one 6 3"" over 200lbs , who can box , has very fast hands , and moves like a middleweight". " The glory of the white race must be preserved"! Jeffries is cheered to the rafters , he then leaves the press conference in triumph.
jeff behind on pts but remaining stoically focused on the job in hand begins to turn the fight in his favour after the 8th round as his planned attack of solid body work takes affect . jeff gets stronger as the fight goes into its latter stages and tubbs yellow streak show's itself resulting in a ko win for jeff in the 13th . with many happy ringsiders agreeing that jeff's excellent early body work had brought the dog out in tubbs not really tubbs hands speed and movement take him to victory
Tubbs was outboxing a bigger harder hitting Bowe who was technically better and for many won that fight. And that was past his prime. I'd pick him to outbox and beat up on Jeffries
Tubbs was outboxing a GREEN bowe who was making adjustments to world level, It was not like he handed Bowe his ass or anything. veteran Tubbs tamed a young naive Bowe and turned it into a friendly sparring session. It was very gentle, nobody was looking to take out the other guy. IMO The Bowe loss is totally over rated, it assumes that Tubbs was a better veteran fighter than he was as an unbeaten prospect and belt holder. On the way up Tubbs was fair but never stood out. He out pointed a washed up jimmy young and a poor bones smith and that’s it. Good wins but results 5 other "fair" contenders were capable of at that time. Beating Greg page had been done before by others, page just had a belt but was no better against Tony than he had been losing to Douglas. there is no unique wins on Tubbs resume at all. The Tubbs who a young bowe found tricky (if that is the best tubbs) was knocked out by Lionel butler and jimmy Ellis so I don’t see how in the grand scheme of things why TNT deserves to be taken so seriously in ATG fantasy matchups.. I think the old boilermaker was a better fighter than Lionel butler. Clarence hill decked an in shape Tubbs back in the day. Tubbs was a crafty, slick but ultimately lazy fighter with fast hands and a few tricks but he only fought as hard as he had to. He did not beat great fighters. I don’t think it is any good pretending that he could.
The ugly side of Blubbs, er, Tubbs is that he was KO'd by Raider scab Jimmy Ellis inside 1 rd and also was KO'd by Tyson's hook in round 2...... Someone else KTFO of Tubbs too, but his name slips my mind right now.... Tubbs had a shaky chin..... MR.BILL
exactly. People talk of Tubbs being good because he troubled a young, unpolished bowe. Truth was Tony Tubbs's resume is far weaker than even buster Douglas - which is actually pretty strong.
That 'green' Bowe had allot more fighting experience than Jeffries and much better technique and no it wasn't a gentle sparring session Bowe was looking to take Tubbs head off. Tubbs probably deteriated after the Bowe fight, accepting he was no longer a contender. Bowe, Witherspoon, Page, Smith, Orlin Norris are all world class opponents and I'd put my money on Tubbs more evolved boxing
nah, tubbs was never that good. Bowe tried to take tubbs head off for two rounds then became diluted with the contagious passive sparring tubbs was so fond of. The last 8 rounds was like shadow boxing.Bowe went to sleep. evolved boxing is one thing and effective fighting is another. the old boiler maker cleaned out a division, that’s how effective he was. The man fought to win. sure he had size and weight on his side but he was the best and was regarded as so by a generation. Tubbs was regarded as among "the lost generation", tubbs simply did not stand out and nor did he record anything better than any otther run of the mill contenders of his day. In the ATG stakes tubbs did not pay his dues.
Jeffries was a great fighter and Tubbs was not. Tubbs would make it interesting, but ultimately he would loose. If one fighter dominates an era, and another is a footnote, there are usualy reasons apart from the size of their respective opposition.
Jeffries handled Armstrong ,who possibly was the early equivalent of Tubbs. It's not beyond the realms of possibilty that Jeffries catches up with Tubbs, maybe not likely, but possible.
