Strike, I meant the comments like "clearly has a big future in the sport" (I'm paraphrasing) type stuff rather than individual attributes/ skills. He's got decent hands and variety but, as you say, it was like a session on the heavy bag with nothing coming back.
If there's nothing coming back for him to worry about, was hoping he'd show a bit more variation in footwork and punches, not just square on hitting gloves, but 1st fight, a win, he's up and running.
Yep. It's a blessing and a curse. Gets him a nice head start, but that brings extra expectation which is not gonna be easy to manage. I think people are making too much out of the Eubank Sr. stuff as well. I'm sure all that was just for the 'launch' to get people reminiscing a little. I don't think his ole man is gonna walk him out and be interviewed everytime out. Anyway, they can play to all that nostalgia all they want as long as the young man can fight, none of it will matter.
thoght e looked good for his 1st fight.anyone else notice that he was throwing his head shgts with more aggression than his body shots.he will improve.
He didn't dip and turn hip into his bodyshots, never dug em in! just threw them which is a common habit nowadays. When i boxed i used to step to side drop and turn shot in!. These kids don't enjoy punching to body. It's sad to see...
It's crazy. Body punching is the single best way to control a fight. No need to worry about head and body movement, and much easier to exploit for a stoppage.
I love the body punching, Mike McCallum with Smitty made a great point about snatching and stealing points to the body IIRC. Thing is the judges don't score it nowdays, some do, some don't and that's a major problem. Plus fact coaches need to teach fighters the virtues of body punching. It's not just to bring guard down to work head. As you say DFT you can control a fight. Slow a man down. Score points and also stop you man if you work the body well. It's the biggest scoring target of body! Sadly i noticed many trainers don't work it on pads. I trained at Fight Factory in Deptford once and the trainer although good didn't once in 3 rounds of pads ask me to throw a body shot. Punching the head isn't possible constantly, it's a softer target and makes it lighter on hands. If i ever train a fighter then bodyshots all the way!! .
I was impressed with Jnr on saturday, he was and will be under immense pressure and he handled it all very well. also nice touch with the music and his Dad walking him into the ring.
