Not many neutral observers will seriously question the majority decision by which Manny Pacquiao edged Juan Manuel Marquez in their welterweight title bout Saturday in Las Vegas.

I thought Pacquiao won 7-5. That’s closer than experts and bettors (and a lot closer than Marquez’s 2009 loss to Floyd Mayweather), expected and closer than any Pacquiao fight since he last fought Marquez, but it was a clear-cut victory.

in the bout, swayed one another into thinking the decision was a travesty. Worse, they swayed Marquez and his trainer Nacho Beristain into believing Marquez had a big lead.

When ring announcer Michael Buffer reported the scoring, he began with Robert Hoyle’s 114-114 verdict. Then he announced Dave Moretti’s 115-113 scorecard and Glenn Trowbridge’s 116-112 tally without telling us who they favored. But it had to be Pacquiao.

It couldn’t have been Marquez. No way on earth did he win eight rounds, whereas the case for Pacquiao winning eight was strong.

Marquez (53-6) did land about 20 clean straight rights in the bout that indeed made a strong impression and kept Pacquiao from landing combinations, but the 38-year-old Mexican did not do enough to win the fight.

Although Pacquiao (54-3-2) deserved the decision, the bout was roughly as even as the first two Pacquiao-Marquez bouts, which were a draw in 2004 and a narrow split decision favoring Pacquiao in 2008.

They fought more conservatively this time, the opposite of what Pacquiao’s camp had led us to believe. The first six rounds were frustrating to all as the two expert counterpunches didn’t sustain much action, and that made Marquez’s occasional successes stand out all the more.

I'm not saying the article is infallible, but some of the points are obviously true.

Pac was the aggressor, did throw and land more punches, and Marquez did squander some rounds by not taking enough risks and not really going for the emphatic win.

And the crowd were indeed influencing the fans watching on TV. Every Marquez connection was met with a huge roar!
